On September 21 and 22 the Department of Innovation Management and Strategy of the University of Groningen, with the support of the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS) and the SOM research school of the Faculty of Economics and Business, organized the first Groningen Collaboration for Innovation Conference and Doctoral Consortium.

The core objective of the event was to contribute to build a broader and more inclusive community on the topic of collaborative innovation. The conference brought together around 50 junior and senior academics that presented their recent work on the theme and shared their thoughts on how firms look beyond their own organizational boundaries when developing innovation activities.

The conference program included studies that look at collaborative innovation from very diverse perspectives: from the role of individuals in alliances, to how a firm’s network influence its innovation activities, from how firms interact with international partners to how alliance governance influences the success of collaboration agreements. This diversity allowed participants to broaden their views on how firms incorporate external resources and knowledge in the development of their innovation activities.

The Groningen Collaboration for Innovation Conference and Doctoral Consortium not only provided a valuable networking opportunity for the community of scholars studying the role of collaboration in innovation activities but also set the stage for new perspectives that help both academics and practitioners to better understand the importance and the mechanisms of collaborative innovation.
