New appointments at In the LEAD: Dimitrios Soudis and Tim Vriend

Datum:17 juni 2015

As of now, two researchers joined In the LEAD, below they shortly introduce themselves:

I completed my doctoral dissertation in November 2014 at the University of Groningen and have been working as a teaching fellow in the Department of Global Economics and Management since February 2015. As an economist I have been working on research projects ranging from firm performance and international trade to the political aspects of Globalization. I am excited to be joining In the LEAD as an Assistant Professor from September 2015.

The main reason I chose to join the center is the multidisciplinary nature of research. The team of In the LEAD is composed of open-minded researchers with diverse backgrounds like economics, psychology, and organizational behavior, among others. I believe these different approaches fit together in an organic way that allows for a truly integrated understanding of an economy from the individual level within firms all the way up to the national level and, by extension, the international economy. In the LEAD’s activities will also have an impact outside of academia by spreading best practices through partnerships with diverse organizations. In short, I expect In the LEAD to be, in deed, a leading research center and I am happy to be a part of it.

Starting in September I will be working towards gathering data on Dutch firms’ management practices as well as characteristics of the leading executives within these firms. This information will be used to guide future research projects studying the interplay between general management practices, leadership styles of executives, and firm performance. In addition, the insights generated will help other Dutch firms benchmark their operations against best practices and become more efficient through evidence based advice.

Tim Vriend

I am a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, currently in the process of finishing my doctoral dissertation, which I aim to submit by the end of August 2015. As a researcher, I have been working on various research projects in which my colleagues and I have examined the effects of leadership and management characteristics (e.g., goal-setting, ranked competitions, and the quality of the relationship between leaders and subordinates) on subordinates’ motivation, creativity, and unethical behaviours. As a teacher, I have been responsible for coordinating and teaching various statistical and methodological courses, and have supervised quite a few MSc Human Resource Management master’s thesis students at our own University of Groningen.

I am very passionate about researching and teaching, and am very excited that I will be able to continue doing both as an Assistant Professor with In the LEAD. One of the main reasons for joining In the LEAD is that it allows me to work on leadership research in a multidisciplinary setting, thereby not focusing solely on the interplay between leaders and subordinates, but also on the effects of (and on) leaders in larger environmental settings such as organizations and society as a whole.

From September on, I will be focusing on multiple research projects, each involving the delicate interplay between leadership characteristics and environmental factors. One particular project of interest involves the effects of environmental factors on objective and subjective career success of leaders. Within this project, my colleagues and I aim to investigate how environmental factors shape leaders’ career paths, how leaders act upon such environmental factors, and how the two of these in tandem influence leaders’ criteria of successful career paths.
