Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

Families experiencing multiple problems

Vanessa develops and teaches various object-based, hands-on and experiential courses at the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen.
In the BA1course Paint to Pixel, taught together with prof. dr. Ann-Sophie Lehmann, we introduce art history students to artists’ materials and techniques by the means of object- and practice-based pedagogy. The students experience materials and techniques hands-on during excursions to the workshops of Minerva Art academy, as well as in the seminars and the assignments (historical reconstructions).
In the interdisciplinary elective course Under the Skin, which I developed together with pedagogue and educator Margreet Smit, we enhance the reflective potential of second year medical students by drawing on teaching methods from philosophy, psychology, (art) history and arts, and crafts. Making (e.g. materializing their ongoing explorations and reflections in an art-based form) was our main didactic method to create space for reflection.
Together with visual artist and researcher Henrike Scholten I designed and taught the elective course Deconstructing Instructions that investigates and reflects critically on the art academy’s history. Using a historically informed, experimental and practice-based pedagogic approach, the 16-week course challenged 23 undergraduate art students to engage with the material and didactic heritage of the art academy.

My PhD research is about the challenges which newcomer residents face when starting their residency. The challenges of residents in transition or twofold; firstly they have to find out how to deliver patient care, secondly they have to become member of the team, department and hospital. In occupational psychology, those challenges are identified as Organizational Socialization, which we use as analytical framework. My supervisors are prof. dr. Götz Wietasch, prof.dr. Debbie Jaarsma, dr. Robbert Duvivier and dr. Jasperina Brouwer.

Title: Interdisciplinary Understanding in Higher Education
In recent years, higher education institutes have developed more and more interdisciplinary education programmes (in the Dutch context). These programmes aim, among other things, to teach students interdisciplinary understanding, translated into knowledge and skills that make it possible to cross disciplinary boarders and contribute to complex solving.
In this PhD trajectory, we investigate the acquisition of interdisciplinary understanding by Bachelor's students who follow an interdisciplinary honours programme. We develop an instrument that measures interdisciplinary understanding (study 1), investigate which students participate in interdisciplinary education (study 2), examine what the interdisciplinary learning process looks like according to students and teachers (study 3) and measure the extent to which students aquire interdisciplinary understanding over the period of a 3-year education programme (study 4).
The research is conducted within the context of the Honours College of the University of Groningen and among high-achieving students who choose not to follow an interdisciplinary honours programme (control group).

Education: In addition, I'm working for SCOPE; the center of expertise of personal development, in the UMCG. We develop and provide education related to student's personal and professional development. Topics addressed are, amongst others, socialisation, professional identity development, values, core qualities and keeping a healthy balance in life. Our education is experiental-oriented, aiming to reach another way of learning by using interactive and creative teaching methods. From a mere cognitive focus back to experiencing, gaining insights about yourself and your social context, and being inspired.
Research: I have finished my PhD thesis in the domain of educational and organizational change. I am fascinated with change in organisations; how people respond, the dynamics that occur, and the complexities of organizing change for those in charge, the change leaders. My PhD thesis particularly focuses on the complexities of organizing change in medical schools' undergraduate curricula.
Topics PhD thesis: undergraduate curriculum change, medical education, complexity, challenges and strategies of change leaders, situational awareness, governance, the role of local institutional contexts in international curriculum development projects.
