I am Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism at the University of Groningen's Center for Language and Cognition. My research agenda is driven by a personal commitment to advancing approaches to multilingualism in education and in society that promote equity, access and democratic participation. My main area of activity is heritage/minority language education with particular attention to its interfaces with social, cognitive, and psychological factors and processes. Within this realm of work, I have been particularly invested in the advancement of translanguaging and its applications and implications for the heritage language classroom. Alongside my work on heritage language education, I have geared many of my efforts towards teacher preparation. Specifically, my work with teachers centres on equipping them with asset-based pedagogical tools and critical mindsets as a means to honour the profiles multilingual and culturally-diverse students bring into the classroom. More recently, my research programme has grown to incorporate attention to the neuro-motor aspects of meaning-making through my research on sensescapes. My research has been supported by over $3.5 million in grants and fellowships. Most of my projects are collaborative, and I enjoy dynamic conversations with collaborators from around the world, including the US, Australia, China, South Africa, and all around Europe. I have given keynotes, invited talks and facilitated workshops in Casablanca, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Dhaka, London, and Aveiro, among many others. In May 2018, I received my PhD in linguistics for my work in heritage speaker bilingualism and education. I conducted my doctoral work at Texas Tech University as a Hellen DeVitt Fellow (2014-2018) under the direction of Professor Diego Pascual y Cabo. Prior to that (2014), I got a MA in applied linguistics from Birkbeck, University of London under Professor Li Wei's direction. I completed my undergraduate education at the Unviersity of Granada, where I received a BA+MA in English Philology and TESOL under the tutorship of Professor Graeme Porte.
