Erik Heeres is no ordinary scientist. Born in Pekela, the researcher evolved from teenager dabbling with a chemistry set to successful project leader of large Dutch and European research consortia. To this day, the Professor of Chemical Engineering is still passionately committed to building a sustainable and innovative future for the Northern Netherlands.

After four years of service, Prof dr H.J. Heeres will step down as Scientific Director of the Engineering and Technology institute Groningen (ENTEG). As of January 1, 2023, his role will be taken over by Prof. dr. B. Jayawardhana .

This enables Van der Maarel and Van der Hoek to conduct a feasibility study for their research project on the application of the glycogen of the microalga Galdieria in skin care products.

In 2023, the three students will join the Electro Trail Europe (Electe).

Seals can already detect the wake of a fish at 180 metres distance. PhD student Xingwen Zheng analysed whiskers from two seal species to find out how they do it. He will defend his thesis on this subject on 19 December.

Erik Heeres is partner in the Horizon Europ consortium NewWave that will receive approximately €5 million via Horizon Europe-RIA. Heeres receives 400k€ to contribute to the development of efficient catalytic routes for hydroxymethyl furfural and phenols from selected biobased feeds.

Jacquelien Scherpen, professor of Discrete Technology and production Automation, and also Captain of Science for the Dutch topsector High Tech Systems and Materials participated the Dutch State Visit to Austria to made the case for more gender diversity in STEM.

Thanks to research by Professors Francesco Picchioni and Ton Broekhuis of the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen of the University of Groningen, a method has been developed with which rubber from old tires can be reused in new products. The companies New Born Rubber and FP Products Holding are now further developing the concept with the input from the researchers of the University. A test installation will be constructed and product technology will be developed. It has been awarded a substantial subsidy of more than €1.3 million. Piles of old car tires cause an environemtal problem because they are not recyclable up to now and therefore often burnt.

Dr Vasilis Kyriakou and Professor Paolo Pescarmona are partners the WAviatER project: Hydrogen production technology for the Aviation sector and Energy applications at a Regional level. The Northern Netherlands consortium will be developing green hydrogen technology.

The prize was awarded on March 16 by the Royal Institute of Engineers (Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs, KIVI).

Dr Elisabeth Wilhelm is partner in the KIC consortium Healthy living as a service that is granted by NWO. Wilhelm will lead the work package "Smart data" that will develop a secure personalized decision support system (DSS).

On 11 November, the first graduates of the two-year master's programme in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Groningen will receive their diplomas. Erik Heeres, professor in Green Chemical Reaction Engineering (ENTEG), is partner in Circular Foam consortium. He receives EURO 650.000 to investigate chemical recycling of polyurethane foams (e.g. mattresses, insulation materials) by converting them into building blocks that can be used to produce polyurethanes. Technology development based on catalytic pyrolysis will be given particular attention.

ENTEG research focusses on green chemistry and circular technology. We also work on artificial intelligence, sensing, big data and other forms of smart processing. Within the framework of Chemport Europe and together with companies in the region ENTEG will combine het strengths on smart and circular aiming to stimulate industrial innovation in the Northern Netherlands.

How can SMEs deploy supercritical CO₂ for the environmentally-friendly production of sustainable chemical products? This question is central to the four-year project being conducted by the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and seven companies. The Province of Groningen and the Northern Netherlands Alliance (SNN) are jointly supporting the initiative with a subsidy of around € 3.8 million. € 3.35 million of this total sum has been provided by a European subsidy (European Regional Development Fund). The project is expected to provide around 50 jobs at the participating companies within the agrifood, energy and chemical sectors and at a future knowledge centre.

Dr. Mónica Acuautla Meneses. ENTEG Her research aims at the synthesis and characterization of ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials, piezoelectric and mechatronic devices, piezoelectric energy harvesting, MEMS/NEMS, flexible electronics and sensors.

An international consortium led by University of Groningen chemical engineer Erik Heeres has received EUR 4 million in funding from the European Union’s Horizon2020 research programme to develop a new, more efficient method for the production of liquid fuels from biomass. They will dissolve biomass in liquid salts to increase the efficiency of pyrolysis.

The University of Groningen (UG) and the MEYER WERFT Papenburg have signed an agreement for a long term partnership until 2050. In two projects ENTEG researchers are in the lead .

Michele Cucuzella (ENTEG) will receive the Best PhD Thesis Award on New Challenges for Energy and Industry from the IEEE Italy Section. The award is sponsored by one of the major players of the electric power industry: ABB. The award will be presented during the Award Ceremony to be held at the 4th International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry. PhD Thesis Award consists in an honorarium of 2000 Euro and a Certificate of Honor.

ABCSalt is a new four-year project funded by Horizon 2020 that will validate a novel route to produce sustainable liquid biofuels at lab scale. Nine European partners from academia, industry and research organisations are collaborating to create new technologies with the potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support the EU towards achieving a low-carbon economy.
