Province of Groningen supports knowledge development of green process technology

How can SMEs deploy supercritical CO2 for the environmentally-friendly production of sustainable chemical products? This question is central to the four-year project being conducted by the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and seven companies. The Province of Groningen and the Northern Netherlands Alliance (SNN) are jointly supporting the initiative with a subsidy of around € 3.8 million. € 3.35 million of this total sum has been provided by a European subsidy (European Regional Development Fund). The project is expected to provide around 50 jobs at the participating companies within the agrifood, energy and chemical sectors and at a future knowledge centre.

An international consortium led by University of Groningen chemical engineer Erik Heeres has received EUR 4 million in funding from the European Union’s Horizon2020 research programme to develop a new, more efficient method for the production of liquid fuels from biomass. They will dissolve biomass in liquid salts to increase the efficiency of pyrolysis.

Oil can be produced from the seeds of the rubber tree, a low-grade waste product found on plantations. The oil can be converted into biodiesel or bioplastic. These conclusions were drawn by Yusuf Abduh from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Groningen, on the basis of laboratory experiments and field tests. He will defend his PhD thesis at the University of Groningen on 27 February.

Virtual spring keeps robots in formation

Robots can work together in formation thanks to a virtual spring consisting of mathematical algorithms. The primary application is to control robots for dike inspections, but the spring can also enable satellites to fly in formation. PhD student Ewoud Vos from the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (ENTEG) and the Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (JBI) describes the development of the algorithms in his PhD thesis, which he will defend on 20 February 2015 at the University of Groningen.

Chemical engineers at the University of Groningen have developed a cost-saving, energy-efficient innovation for water authorities. The addition of coal dust makes sewage sludge easier to de-water and generates biomass that can be used as fuel. This will enable water authorities to save up to a few million euros a year.
