Vassilis Kyriakou promoted to associate professor at ENTEG

We are pleased to announce the promotion of dr. Vassilis Kyriakou to Associate Professor in Processes and Materials for Energy Conversion at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen. The research of Dr. Kyriakou extends the research activities of theProdcut Technology group of ENTEG and is centered around chemical engineering, (electro)catalysis and materials science.

Vassilis Kyriakou holds a PhD and a MSc in Chemical Engineering, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and he has been as postdoctoral researcher in the Yildiz Lab at MIT, DIFFER, and CERTH before joining RUG as an Assistant Professor.

Vassilis’ research aims to answer fundamental questions for instrumental chemical conversion technologies towards a sustainable energy economy. By bridging electrochemical reaction engineering, heterogeneous catalysis, and materials science, his team creates tailored and nanoengineered materials and processes that enable industrial electrification and process intensification. Key technologies include solid oxide, protonic ceramic and anion exchange membrane cells towards the production of chemicals, fuels such as hydrogen, syngas, hydrocarbons and ammonia or their conversion back to electrical power.

Vassilis leads a diverse team of around 15 researchers including PhDs, postdocs and undergraduate students who work on diverse research projects (around 4.5 Meuros) that are funded by individual grants (NWO M-1, VENI) as well as public/private projects (NWO KIC, GroenvermogenNL). Vassilis has also been awarded several prestigious awards and scholarships such as the one from the National Academy of Athens for his research work on Electrifying the Haber-Bosch Process for Ammonia and he is a Board member of the Program Council of ChemistryNL and the ECS High Temperature Domain.
