Deuss and Heeres contribute to HyFINE: advancing sustainable fine chemicals production

30 January 2026

The Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (ENTEG) is a key partner in the HyFINE consortium, a major initiative under the GroenvermogenNL program focused on sustainable production of fine chemicals and specialties. Led by a collaboration of nine universities, three universities of applied sciences, three research institutes, and twenty companies, HyFINE aims to transform the chemical industry by developing innovative, green processes.

Within ENTEG, the team led by Prof. P.J. Deuss and Prof. H.J. Heeres will appoint a PhD candidate to focus on converting lignin, a byproduct of bioethanol production, into valuable fine chemicals using green hydrogen. The project builds on catalytic hydrodepolymerization technology developed through the ABC Salt project (a European collaboration), further advancing it for various lignin streams and new reactor concepts for continuous production and scale-up. This work will be conducted in close partnership with Biomass Technology Group (Enschede), Vertoro (Eindhoven), and Shell.

For more information about the HyFINE consortium and its broader goals, please refer to the University of Groningen’s news announcement.
