Paolo Pescarmona awarded TKI grant for sustainable ammonia oxidation and green hydrogen research
Paolo Pescarmona (Engineering and Tec hnology institute Groningen) has received a €180k subsidy from TKI Groene Chemie en Circulariteit for the project “Engineering Electrocatalyst Design for Combined Ammonia Oxidation and Green Hydrogen Production.”
A major challenge in today’s society in the Netherlands is the reduction of nitrogen deposition, largely caused by ammonia emissions from agriculture, with negative impacts on biodiversity. In response, this project focuses on the ammonia electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) in digestate, a by-product of manure digesters. The research aims not only to advance scientific understanding of AOR but, above all, to provide practical solutions that support the agricultural sector in achieving its sustainability objectives. The team will also investigate the technology’s applicability to other residual flows, such as reject water from wastewater treatment plants.
This project exemplifies the University of Groningen’s dedication to translating research into actionable, sustainable innovations.
