Staff members with discipline Behavioural Sciences

Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

Overview of all disciplines

My research explores the psychological consequences of inequitable wealth distribution (unevenly distributed wealth within a population) and their impact on consumers' decision making. With this line of research, my aim is to (1) further our understanding of the negative consequences of economic inequality on societally relevant outcomes, which has policy implications and enables researchers to develop relevant interventions, and (2) demonstrate how a macroeconomic condition can interact with sociological and psychological variables to predict consumer behavior.

After my education in communication science, social psychology and sociology, I started my PhD project in August 2017 in the department Health Psychology. My project (financed by the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF Kankerbestrijding)) is on the care needs of cancer patients who suffer from depressive symptoms. During my project, I will conduct three studies; the first is an ESM study on depressive symptoms to see which symptoms are most central in cancer patients. The second study is a longitudinal study to examine how barriers, coping mechanisms, social support levels, and illness perceptions make that a large group of cancer patients with depressive symptoms does not seek help for these symptoms. In this study we will also examine if depressive symptoms decrease over time and how this relates to coping mechanisms, social support levels and illness perceptions. In a qualitative study, we will examine underlying ideas, goal dis- and re-engagement, and ask people who did seek psychological care why they decided to do so.
My project is supervised by Dr. M.J. Schroevers, Prof. Dr. A.V. Ranchor and Dr. J. Fleer.

Field / Discipline
My background is in Health Psychology and I was originally trained as a researcher. In 2006 I graduated with my thesis entitled ‘Quality of life of testicular cancer survivors’. After my graduation I continued doing research in the field of adjustment to chronic illness (e.g., cancer, diabetes, heart disease, chronic headache). One line of work is concerned with psychological screening and interventions, a second line of work focuses on self- and goal regulation in chronically ill people. In 2008, I started to combine my research with teaching tasks and research in education. Currently, I have a key role in teaching in the bachelor of medicine, as Course Director of semester 3.2, and have the lead in developing the line Leadership development for the bachelor- and master of medicine. Recently, I received funding to set up a program on personal development for all bachelor and master students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Besides that I received funding to set up the interfacultaire minor 'More Healthy Years: Current Challenges in Public Health'. I integrated my educational and research aspirations within The Juggle Study, a large prospective cohort study on mental health (e.g. burnout, engagement) in medical students, for which the data collection is ongoing (it will be completed in 2024).

My expertise lies in the field of psychosocial intervention research that improve health in broad sense. Healthy aging not only involves prevention and curing diseases. People aging successfully are individuals who have the ability to adapt and self manage in the face of social, physical, and emotional challenges. The  Self-Management of Well-being interventions have demonstrated to be effective, and I’m currently working on projects to make this intervention more widely available and suitable for a larger group of older individuals. I have a background in social and health psychology and received my PhD in 2011 in the field of cognitive behavioral interventions for cancer-related fatigue. As a postdoc I broadened my expertise to fatigue in other illnesses, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, kidney transplant recipients and chronic fatigue syndrome. More recently, I'm focusing on the possibility of e-health psychosocial interventions for cancer patients.

During my PhD, I will investigate how leader gender affects the advantages and disadvantages that come with holding a senior position. Findings from this investigation will generate valuable insight into how the experiences of women in senior positions differ from those of men, and how to aid women once they have acquired a leadership position.

My research focuses on the effects of hearing loss and aging on voice and speech perception. During my PhD at IRCAM and the Brain and Spine Institute in Paris, I investigated the role of speaker and language familiarity on emotional voice perception, using voice transformation software. I am interested in combining behavioral and electrophysiological (EEG) measures to study different processing stages involved speech perception, from low-level perception of voice cues to higher level speech understanding.

PhD-student research group Higher Education (GMW)

I set up a research project to learn more about the academic development of high achieving Bachelor’s students (i.e. honours students and non-honours students who belong to the best 10% of their degree programme). The goal of this research is to measure the learning interests and preferences of high achieving Bachelor’s students and to follow the interdisciplinary learning gains of an honours programme. The outcomes of this research project might contribute to the further development of interdisciplinary education and honours programmes. Policy Officer Education (Office of the University)
I work for the Strategy Department of Education & Research as a policy officer and am responsible for policy issues concerning minor programmes.

Coming from a background in pediatric nursing and social sciences I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in Health Psychology where I do research on (the underlying mechanisms of) psychological adaptation of children, adolescents and young adults with a somatic disease and their parents.

I am inherently interested in the phenomenon of positive adaptation which I came across when I worked as a nurse with very ill children, during my PhD in children with cancer, and in India where I am involved in research activities for an NGO that provides healthcare and education for the poorest of the poor who live on the streets of Kolkata (Calcutta).

My current rearch focuses on:
- Selfregulation: goal adjustment, benefit-finding/post-traumatic growth
- Goal conflict

I have a strong interest in cross-cultural research.
