Mazlum Özkan is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Groningen. His research explores how protest movements respond to repression, with a focus on Iran. He studies how state violence, opposition discourse, and symbolic strategies shape collective action, combining theory with computational text and visual analysis. His latest work examines the emotional dynamics of protest imagery during the Women, Life, Freedom movement. His broader interests include politics in Iran and the Middle East, as well as great power politics in the region. He is affiliated with the SCOOP program and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS).
