Mazlum Özkan is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Groningen. His research focuses on protest and social movements. He studies how movements respond to repression and how state violence shapes collective action. His work also examines political discourse, emotions, and symbolic practices in protest. He combines theory with computational text and visual analysis. His current research examines the emotional dynamics of protest imagery during Iran’s Women, Life, Freedom movement. His broader interests include Iranian and Middle Eastern politics and great-power politics in the region. He is affiliated with the SCOOP program and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS).
