Heritage and Religion

How can museums deal with collections from colonial pasts? What is the significance of religious heritage in a secular society? And how is heritage be used by minorities to protect their traditions?

Heritage has become a significance topic in today’s political and cultural debates. Across Europe, many religious buildings are losing their original function. Governments and the EU are investing millions in plans for conservation and adaptive re-use. Meanwhile, tourism and pilgrimage to religious objects, sites, and festivals are booming - raising urgent questions about sustainability and cultural impact of heritage.

At the same time, migration and secularization reshape religious identities of communities, and their relationship to the past. War, displacement, demographic change, and climate crisis put both material and immaterial heritage at risk. Preservation is urgent, yet resources are limited and interests often clash. How can these tensions be navigated?

This is a unique interdisciplinary track at the interface of religion, identity, history, politics, and heritage studies. You are challenged to develop your own position and voice to debates. And during your placement, you will be able to apply your critical and analytical skills to the real dilemmas and challenges facing the heritage sector nowadays.

Programme

The MA-track Heritage and Religion comprises a total of 60 ECTS. The programme is structured in such a way as to provide a balance between practical learning with community-based professionals, and academic research.

There are two core modules (5 ECTS each), a research methods module (5 ECTS), a practical placement (10 ECTS), and a thesis (20 ECTS). In addition, you choose three electives (5 ECTS each). This can be the electives listed below, but you can also choose electives from one of the other tracks within the one-year Master's programme in Theology and Religious Studies.

Students who would like to write their thesis from a social scientific approach, may choose the course 'Social Scientific Research Methods', instead of the course 'Fragments and Ruins: Heritage and Historical Approaches to the Past'.

No matter what your goals may be, the degree gives you both a strong grounding in heritage theory and practice.

Semesters
CoursesCourse Catalog >1a1b2a2b
Core Module: The Uses of the Past: Public History and Heritage (5 EC)

This course provides an introduction to key concepts, methods, and issues in contemporary heritage studies and public history. And students will learn how historical research can be presented to a wide audience in various different contexts, such as museum exhibitions, or by means of documentaries and other media.

Elective: Dark Heritage: Memorialising Death and Disaster (5 EC, optional)

Many, perhaps most, of the items and phenomena we study as 'heritage' are death-related. This course offers the much-needed tools to analyse this important category of heritage. At the same time, the course offers students the opportunity to learn new skills, such as producing a documentary film or curating a 3D virtual exhibition.

Elective: Material Religion: Things, Places, Performances, and Belief (5 EC, optional)

What can things and their uses teach us about religion? This course focuses on material culture as a way of approaching religious heritage. We learn from material culture theory, and apply what we learn in a community-based material heritage project.

Core Module: Creative Heritage: Practices, Communities and Institutions (5 EC)

First, students will examine basic theories of religious meaning making and the postsecular. The course then explores to areas of contemporary meaning-making around religious heritage: local churches in Groningen and minority communities in the Netherlands more broadly. Students will then meet with local heritage professionals and church leaders to discuss the challenges of their work.

Elective: Museums and Religion: Critical Approaches (5 EC, optional)

How is religion addressed (or avoided) in museums? What is at stake in the “musealization” of religious sites, objects, and practices? Who has control over what is displayed, where? This course gives the skills to analyse the history of the relationship between museums and religion, museum theory, and contemporary practice.

Research Methods: Fragments and Ruins: Heritage and Historical Approaches to the Past (5 EC)

This interdisciplinary course addresses a central topic to textual, historical, heritage, and material approaches to the past: much of what survives is in fragments and ruins. What questions does this fragmentary and ruinous survival raise both for scholars and for those working in the field of heritage or history? The course introduces heritage-based and historical/textual approaches to the theoretical concepts of fragments and ruins, and analytical approaches from across disciplines. Students are required to prepare a field-review related to their research interests, and to draft a research proposal.

Internship (10 EC)

Instead of an internship, you have the option to do a research project.

Thesis (20 EC)

You will write a thesis on a subject of your choice.

Thesis seminar

During these seminar meetings you will learn about specific methodologies and will discuss and practice the planning, researching, and writing of a Master thesis.

Study load

40 hours of class and self-study per week on average

1 ECTS = 28 hrs. of study. One year contains of 60 ECTS. You will have on average 6 hrs. of lessons per week at the Faculty, the rest of the hours is reserved for preparation of the classes and studying.
