The Complexities and Challenges of Non-prototypical Leadership

Abstract:

Not all individuals match the prototypical image of a leader. This not only creates obstacles for non-prototypical individuals to rise to leadership positions, but also for their effectiveness once they have obtained such higher hierarchical positions. Within my talk, I will discuss research that addresses the complexities around being a non-prototypical leader from two approaches. The first line of research deals with some of the conditions under which ethnic minority individuals and women are more or less likely to rise to leadership positions. Second, I will discuss research pertaining to the challenges of being a non-prototypical leader, and how these challenges might be mitigated by non-prototypical leaders' behaviors.
