My background is in Health Psychology and I was originally trained as a researcher. In 2006 I graduated with my thesis entitled ‘Quality of life of testicular cancer survivors’. After my graduation I continued doing research in the field of adjustment to chronic illness (e.g., cancer, diabetes, heart disease, chronic headache). One line of work is concerned with psychological screening and interventions, a second line of work focuses on self- and goal regulation in chronically ill people. In 2008, I started to combine my research with teaching tasks and research in education. Currently, I have a key role in teaching in the bachelor of medicine, as Course Director of semester 3.2, and have the lead in developing the line Leadership development for the bachelor- and master of medicine. Recently, I received funding to set up a program on personal development for all bachelor and master students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Besides that I received funding to set up the interfacultaire minor 'More Healthy Years: Current Challenges in Public Health'. I integrated my educational and research aspirations within The Juggle Study, a large prospective cohort study on mental health (e.g. burnout, engagement) in medical students, for which the data collection is ongoing (it will be completed in 2024).

- My two main and general areas of expertise are "clinical and health psychology" and "research in psychology".  I have been working on the topic of burnout since the end of my bachelor of psychology in Mexico City. After my bachelor, which had a predominant emphasis in clinical psychology and health psychology, I moved to Groningen to study a research master in "Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology".

During my master, I researched the influence of goal conflict, goal adjustment, and personality on the levels of burnout of medical students at the University of Groningen.

Currently, as a Ph.D., I continue working with medical students, this time, designing an intervention to address their burnout levels.

I study lifespan changes in personality and subjective wellbeing ("happiness") and their link with affect/emotion/mood dynamics and the environment in which one lives and grows (e.g., our social network, daily activities, adverse events, culture) at the University of Groningen in the Department of Psychology and in the Interdisciplinary Center Psychopathology and Emotion regulation (www.ICPE.NL). See google.scholar or   researchgate  for details.

My first line of research focuses on (predictors of) adaptation to chronic illness (cancer, diabetes). Specific research interests include: depression, emotion-regulation, self-regulation, mindfulness, and self-compassion.

My second research line addresses the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of psychological screening and interventions and the underlying mechanisms of change, with a specific focus on individual Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

My main research interests lie in the development of patient-centered diagnostic and risk-prediction models for use in psychiatric practice. More specifically, my research focuses on the methodological and statistical approaches that are needed to develop such models in evidence-based research. My methodological/statistical interests lie in (1) Modern Psychometrics, (2) Modeling of (intensive) longitudinal data, (3) Prediction Modeling and (4) Machine Learning.
As part of my job, I work as a statistical advisor for researchers in the UMCG Department of Psychiatry and in affiliated mental healthcare institutions.
