Make a difference! Add value to health and care.

How can healthcare improve health outcomes and patient experiences while containing costs and guaranteeing access for all?

High-quality healthcare is a critical foundation for individual well-being and a well-functioning society. Healthcare systems require maintenance, improvement and innovation on all levels. Healthcare managers need to cope with societal challenges and deploy technological opportunities without disrupting ongoing care delivery. One challenge is our ageing society with its growing demand and rising expectations, while fewer hands are available to provide care and the costs need to be contained. How can we reconcile these tensions? Which trade-offs need to be made? The managerial challenges require a strategic vision and coordinated efforts within healthcare companies as well as with other players in this dynamic field. This creates a demand for multidisciplinary educated professionals with both analytic and managerial skills, and a crisp understanding of the social-economic environment.

In the MSc BA Health you develop the key competences to understand and make a difference in this highly relevant sector. The course offerings combine healthcare management and health economics. You are provided with options to develop a more managerial or a more economic focus. Yet, you also look beyond the managerial or economic perspective: how to take the clients', clinicians', carers', and insurers' positions into regard? MSc BA Health Graduates have solidly prepared themselves to contribute to the multifaceted world of healthcare and prevention.

Research

Linking education to research and career preparation

Our education is research driven, leading to fresh insights being fed into the courses. An analytical, critical mind and problem-solving capabilities are important qualities in any career our students aspire. To develop such qualities, we work with lecturers that are active in research and discuss academic research right from the start of the degree programme.

In doing so, clear links with professional practices are made. Through case assignments, guest lectures, and other activities, students apply what they learn to practical health care management and health economics problems. As such, you engage in your development as a future professional.

In collaboration with external partners, the faculty conducts research on topical issues such as improving patient logistics; the effectiveness of organizational interventions; implementation and adoption of technological and managerial innovations; continuous quality improvement in healthcare; buyer/supplier relationships between insurance companies and healthcare providers; reducing health inequalities; economic evaluation of innovations or treatments; prevention management issues considering early life conditions and later-life health.

Much of this research is conducted in the Centre of Expertise Healthwise, providing students with numerous links to the outside world. Moreover, many of the lecturers participate in the Aletta School of Public Health, a large multidisciplinary research community.
