Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

Director Institute for Medical Education
I am communication advisor at Dialysis Center Groningen and PhD-student at the UMCG. My PhD is about supporting patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and low health literacy (LHL). This research project Bridging the gap, is financed by the Social Sciences Call of the Dutch Kidney Foundation. I also performed a systematic review on associations of LHL in CKD, which formed the backbone of this call. I am also responsible for a research project which assesses the needs of LHL dialysis patients considering e-health and test the effect of an e-health prototype in this group. I developed education materials to promote knowledge regarding CKD, available treatment options and impact of treatment on daily life.

Pediatric Pulmonology, Genetics and Environmental factors in asthma and atopy, functional genetics

Gerard Koppelman is a clinician-scientist whose goal is to improve early diagnosis and prevention of asthma, and to optimize treatment of asthma in childhood. As a pediatric pulmonologist, he focuses on children with severe chronic lung disease. In his research, Koppelman investigates diagnostic DNA tests for asthma and early biomarkers of disease. Major accomplishments include the identification of novel genes for asthma, eczema and hay fever, as well as epigenetic signatures in childhood asthma. Koppelman studies the function of asthma genes in cells and animal models, and develops patient-based models to better understand asthma inception in childhood. He collaborates closely with patients in his research, and initiated a mini medical school to inform the public on progress in research and patient care.

My research focuses on health literacy and communication to promote health, equity and participation of individuals and populations. Especially, those who are at risk for adverse outcomes are an important target group within my research. Examples of populations at risk are children born prematurely, individuals with low health literacy, individuals with multiple unhealthy behaviours and children or adolescents with mental health problems.
