As part of its Graduate Programme, the
Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research
(NWO) has awarded an EUR 800,000 grant to the Graduate School of Science and the research school
Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology at the University of Groningen.
The grant is awarded to graduate schools that are deemed to have an excellent teaching and research environment and is intended to be used towards training young researchers.
NWO has awarded thirteen Dutch research schools a grant as part of its Graduate Programme,
including the Netherlands Research School of Chemical Biology in which the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry (FSE, formerly known as FWN) participates.
The Graduate School of Science will use this financial stimulus to fund four PhD students in the area of synthetic biology. The Synthetic Biology section at the research school Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology aims to implement synthetic biology approaches for advanced engineering of microbial cell metabolism. Engineering principles are applied in designing and redesigning metabolic pathways in vivo for chemical conversions and establishment of novel cellular functionalities.
In the previous round of the Graduate Programme, the Graduate School of Science received a grant for
