iGEM-team wins Gold Medal and 1st place

The student team of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (formerly known as the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) has won a Gold Medal and 1st place in the international iGEM-competition in Boston! In this synthetic biology challenge, more than 300 student teams from over the world compete with each other, including top universities like MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Beijing, Tokio and Munich.

The Groningen iGEM team used the DNA of bacteria as a storage medium for data and encryption method. The team consists of 14 students of various degree programmes including Molecular Biology and Biotechnology , Computing Science , Biomedical Sciences , Behavioural & Cognitive Neurosciences , and Applied Physics .

Besides the gold medal and 1st place in their category of Information Processing - and you can only take part in one category -, the team got nominated for Best Software, Best Education and Outreach, and Best Wiki (their project report). So, a pretty good team achievement!
