Staff members with discipline Psychology, Developmental

Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

Focussing on action-perception learning and development from a combined perspective of Ecological Psychology and dynamical systems theory. Using Uncontrolled Manifold analyses and multifractal analyses to asses stability, variability, and interaction dynamics of the action-perception system. Studies exploratory processes to determine how new behaviors emerge and are stabilized during developmentand and learning. Uses a task perspective to develop serious games to train upper limb prosthetic use.

I am intrigued by the possibilities for learning and development that engaging in joint action can offer, which I study from a dynamical systems perspective. I investigate the process of discovering possibilities for action (affordances) within a social system, by integrating theory and methodology from movement sciences and psychology in embodied naturalistic tasks.

My research is centrally concerned with how social environments (ranging from cultural resources and discourses to everyday social interactions) influence individual development. For example, my PhD research project focuses on how sexual identity construction is influenced by conversation partners, who mediate the influence of cultural conceptions on sexual identity development in the context of everyday interactions. I am also interested in developing methods and theoretical frameworks for understanding how discursive processes can account for the emergence of psychological properties that are commonly understood as latent traits. I have a specific expertise in: dynamic systems theory, thematic analysis, narrative analysis, time series analysis, discourse and conversation analysis, identity construction, queer theory, LGBTQ* psychology, and identity development.

Bertus Jeronimus studies individual differences in what humans feel, think, want and do (personality) and their subjective wellbeing ("happiness") and lifespan trajectories of these phenomena and their link to stress, anxiety, depression and the socioecology in which one lives and grows, especially intimate support relationships, daily activities, adverse events, culture, and history. Jeronimus works at the University of Groningen in the Department of Psychology and in the Interdisciplinary Center Psychopathology and Emotion regulation (www.ICPE.NL). See Google.Scholar or  Researchgate for details. Currently focused on happy neurotics, the stress process, and the unfolding Covid-19 pandemic and the psychosocial consequences.

I study the ontology or process mechanisms of self and identity (and related concepts) as situated in time and context, and I am primarily interested in family and educational contexts. In much of my research I adopt a complex dynamic systems approach, which I apply to theoretical or micro-genetic work. In much of my current research I am inspired by critical psychology, discursive psychology, and philosophical psychology.

This study investigates the effect of dog-assisted therapy for children with Down Syndrome and Autism, and looks for a possible mechanism to explain this effect: Increased synchronization between the movements of child and therapy dog.

Positive bias | Optimism | Information processing bias | Mental health | Depression | Loss of pleasure | Experience sampling | Intergenerational transmission | Peer experiences

My main research interest is positive bias, the phenomenon that many people see the world more brightly and more positive than it really is. Positive bias may protect us from developing mental health problems. Where do individual differences in optimism come from? As part of my Veni project The bright side of life: understanding the origins of optimism, I investigate to what extent and how parents transmit their optimism to offspring.

I am passionate about improving scientific practice. I am a member of my department’s Ethics Committee and of the Open Science Community Groningen, where I give pre-registration workshops. Examples of open science practices in my work are pre-registrations, sharing syntax and data, and publishing open access.
