Staff members with discipline Health Care Sciences & Services

Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

My researches aim to support patients with ‘limited literacy’, who have problems to understand and act on health information and communication, in their disease and treatment understanding and management. My main research focuses on chronic kidney disease (CKD) and limited health literacy (LHL). This project, Bridging the gap, is financed by the Social Sciences Call of the Dutch Kidney Foundation and aims to develop both a training for health care professionals to support patients with limited health literacy as well as the multimedial intervention ‘Keep a Grip on Your Kidneys’ for patients with all kind of visual information and advices to protect the kidneys. I am also part of a research team on social insurance literacy. With quantitative and qualitative methods our project on social insurance literacy aims to learn how literacy problems affect social insurance processes and what is needed to improve the support of people with these problems.

Clinical epidemiologist (MSc) with a broad background in nutrition. Specialised in nutrition and IBD. As an assistant professor, I am working for the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology First, I designed and coordinate two clinical research projects with a focus on the nutritional status of high risk oncological patients undergoing 1. oesophagectomy or 2. cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and Hyperthermic IntraPEritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC).Next, I am focussing on nutritional research for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Based on literature, I developed an anti-inflammatory diet for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (the Groningen Anti-Inflammatory Diet: GrAID). This diet can also be used in other immune mediated inflammatory diseases. Currently, we are testing this diet in the Vita_GrAID trial. In this large RCT we investigate 1. the effect of this anti-inflammatory diet, 2. a special coated vitamin capsule a large RCT and 3. a placebo capsule in patients with Crohn's disease and their healthy household members. As a clinical epidemiologist, I support other co-workers in their research questions. Besides, I teach "Malnutrition in Hospitals" in the master module "Nutrition in Medicine" and the curriculum of medical students, and "Nutrition and IBD"in the master of Pharmaceutical and Drug Innovation. Furthermore, I am involved in writing several international guidelines on nutrition and IBD.

Esther Feijen-de Jong is an expert in maternity care. In this discipline, she has conducted several studies focusing on the organization of maternity care. In this research she has two priorities:
1. Improving care for women in a vulnerable position. This research focuses on how to better connect maternity care to the needs of this group of women. Relationship-based care is an important theme in this. All this to improve access to care.
2. Monitoring and improving the well-being of (student) midwives. From the start in midwifery education to the retirement of midwives.

NWO-VENI laureate Prof. Hak and his multidisciplinary team have supervised >30 PhD theses on the validity of scientific statistical and epidemiological causal design methods to assess (side-) effects of drugs and vaccines using Real-World Big Health Care and Biobank Data. Scientific methods consider a variety of designs such as case-control, cohort, case-only, sibling designs, instrumental variable analysis, propensity score analysis often in combination with RCTs, meta-analyses and Individual Patient Data designs. His scientific work led to >400 peer-reviewed publications till 2021 (Web of Science H-index 44, >8,000 citations). As leader of the PharmLines Initiative,  a public-private collaboration between Lifelines BV-UMCG-RUG, he initiates and co-supervises research in the area of Precision Medicine with linked biobank, genetic, clinical, pharmacological and health care data of >80,000 persons from the Northern region. Topics mainly concern the pharmaco-epidemiology of preventive medications as well as vaccinations. In addition, his team supports the societal impact by studying the optimal methods to implement innovations in the area of sustainable drug applications and  vaccination strategies (e.g. drug repurposing, data science technologies to support optimal drug use, development of infection risk profiles and vaccination passport).

Prof. Hak is program director of the two-year Groningen Research Master Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences. As a director he implemented innovations regarding the extension of research tracks including Pharmaceutical Design & Engineering, Drug Toxicology &Translational Technologies and Pharmacoepidemiology & -Economics. With these tracks the complete drug development cycle can be studied within MPS. He further introduced a strong mentorate for students, monitoring of research projects, clear selection criteria for examiners and committee evaluations of research projects, which resulted in a Top-label in 2017 and 2019 by the influential Dutch Keuzegids (MPS belongs to the top-10% best master educations in the Netherlands). As educational director Pharmacy (>100 faculty) he applies his broad expertise to lead the cluster Pharmacy, also in close collaboration with sister Faculties.

Gerard Koppelman is a clinician-scientist whose goal is to improve early diagnosis and prevention of asthma, and to optimize treatment of asthma in childhood. As a pediatric pulmonologist, he focuses on children with severe chronic lung disease. In his research, Koppelman investigates diagnostic DNA tests for asthma and early biomarkers of disease. Major accomplishments include the identification of novel genes for asthma, eczema and hay fever, as well as epigenetic signatures in childhood asthma. Koppelman studies the function of asthma genes in cells and animal models, and develops patient-based models to better understand asthma inception in childhood. He collaborates closely with patients in his research, and initiated a mini medical school to inform the public on progress in research and patient care. He is the co-founder and chair of the ExquAIro foundation, aimed at improving health trough artificial intelligence.

I am psychologist and epidemiologist, currently working as assistant professor at the University of Groningen. My dissertation was titled Development of patient centered management of asthma and COPD in primary care with a strong emphasis on the use of technology and patient involvement. I have also worked as project leader eHealth in a large health care organization and I am active as board member or advisor in several patient organisations. These hands-on experiences with patients, health care professionals and health care organisations are valuable in my daily work. Above that, my unique experience in clinical, behavioural and implementation science have led to a solid and multidisciplinary basis for health research. In the past years I have coached and lectured numerous bachelor, master and PhD students with different backgrounds and from different faculties. In my role as project leader and chair I have learned to manage longitudinal (international) projects with researchers, health care professionals and students. My goal is to use my talent, experience and my passion for science to improve scientific knowledge in the field of eHealth.
