Your research strategy

Your research strategy - logo

How do you demonstrate academic and societal impact in your research? How can you work on your professional development as a researcher? And how can you increase the chances that you are nominated for prizes and memberships of prestigious organizations? These are some of the questions that you might consider when developing a strong research and impact strategy.

Discuss how to develop your strategy with your manager, your HR advisor, and possibly with the Faculty Funding Officer.

Professional development

Professional development

A good academic is much more than just an expert in their field. This is why it is essential to continue developing the general skills that will help you to design and conduct research throughout your academic career. The precise nature of these skills partly depends on your personal and professional profile and the phase of your research.

Following courses and programmes

The University of Groningen (UG) offers lots of courses and programmes aimed at maintaining your personal and professional development.

Courses and programmes

Corporate Academy lists all of the courses available to UG members of staff. You can filter your search to find specific subjects, such as Funding Skills, and you can search in English or Dutch.

Determining your research strategy

Determining your research strategy

Does the strategy for your research project correspond with the long-term research strategy? How does your strategy fit into a potential funding plan? And how does your strategy relate to the UG's strategy in general? These are important points when determining your research strategy.

Research strategy in your faculty

It is always a good idea to find out how well your research plan and accompanying strategy fit in with the research strategy of your faculty. This is something you can discuss with the Director of Research and your manager. You should also check whether your research strategy corresponds with the latest developments regarding Open Science.

Open Science

The UG has launched an Open Science programme aimed at stimulating and fully integrating Open Science into the research and teaching culture. Open research practices cover the entire research and teaching process: take, for example, the pre-registration of research, open research material, FAIR data, open code, open access publications, open teaching aids, and public engagement.

Creating impact and demonstrating impact

Creating impact and demonstrating impact

Investing in a strong impact strategy is a precondition for demonstrating the societal and academic impact of your research. This is also a requirement when applying for funding for your research.

Support at central and faculty levels

Research Intelligence Services

Support is available at a central level in the shape of expert advice, training courses, and services in the field of impact.

IP & Business Development

The IP & Business Development department of the Knowledge Transfer Office focuses on boosting the societal impact of research and encouraging entrepreneurship. Intellectual property (IP) is often an important aspect of regional, national, and international public-private partnerships, and as such, essential in allowing promising research at the UG and the UMCG to develop further and generate impact.

Support from IP & Business Development entails providing help with applying for patents, safeguarding intellectual property rights (IPR), commercializing research (e.g., licences or transfer agreements), and advice about launching start-up companies. The IP & Business Development team can also help you to set up public-private partnerships. This could include help with identifying commercial partners, negotiating the conditions for a licence or IP- transfer, and agreeing contracts.

Prizes and memberships

Prizes and memberships

Nominations for prizes and membership of academic societies are a token of recognition and appreciation of your research. In addition, prizes and memberships elevate your position in academic circles and help you to acquire funding.

Nominations

Your research or publication can be nominated for a prize or a grant. Talk to your manager, peers, or advisor, such as a Faculty Funding Officer or a research policy officer, about which prizes, memberships, or grants are best suited to you and your research. The Faculty Deans also play a significant role in nominating suitable candidates. To increase your chances of a nomination, make sure that your profile is up-to-date and inform your Faculty Dean about your ambitions.
