Step-by-step guide on completing registration Master International Relations

If you have received a Letter of Admission from the Admissions Board which states that you have been admitted to the Master International Relations directly, please follow these instructions to complete your registration.


Step 1 (of 6): Registration in Studielink (only for student with a Dutch degree)

First of all you need to register via the Dutch Higher education system Studielink ( www.rug.studielink.nl ) before 31 January for the track of the Master International Relations (code: 60734) you have been granted access to by the Admissions Board ( tracks are: European Integration, International Political Economy, International Security, Geopolitics & Connectivity (formerly: Global Governance), International Relations and International Organizations and East Asian Studies ).

Please note the following:

  • I f you have or will attain a non-Dutch Bachelor’s degree you will already have registered through Studielink. You do not have to do this again.
  • After registration in Studielink you may get a message that you must also apply via the Online Admission System (OAS) of the University of Groningen. If you have or will attain a Dutch Bachelor's Degree, registration in OAS is not necessary.


Step 2 (of 6): Payment of tuition fees

After registration in Studielink you need arrange the payment of tuition fees at the RUG BEFORE 31 January !


Step 3 (of 6): Validation of conditions

After completing step 1 and 2 you will have to provide proof of meeting the conditions stipulated in the Letter of Admission in order to be registered in the programme. What you need to provide depends on your situation:

Students with a non Dutch Bachelor’s Degree Students with a Dutch Bachelor’s Degree (non-RUG) Students with a RUG Bachelor’s Degree

If you have or will obtain a non-Dutch Bachelor’s degree you will have received instructions from the Admissions Office about your registration for the Master International Relations.

If you have any questions about your registration, please contact the Admissions Office: admission@rug.nl

After you have been granted a Bachelor's Degree , please send an email to the Faculty of Arts Office for Student Affairs, bsz.let@rug.nl in which you ask them to complete your registration for the Master programme.

Please indicate:

  • your name
  • student number
  • a scan of your diploma
  • a copy of your Letter of Admission

If you have not received your Bachelor’s degree yet, an official statement of your degree programme that you have completed your Bachelor programme (graduation date must be 31 January at the latest!) will be sufficient as well.

After you have been granted a Bachelor's Degree , please email to the Faculty of Arts Office for Student Affairs: bsz.let@rug.nl in which you ask them to complete your registration for the Master programme.

Please indicate:

  • your name
  • student number
  • a copy of your Letter of Admission

Step 4 (of 6): Enrolment courses Master programme

For the structure of t he programme, please check the programme schedule on the tab 'programme' on the Master International Relations website (select your track first).

Courses

For students of the tracks European Integration, International Political Economy, International Security, Global Governance, International Relations and International Organization in the semester that starts in February you will be starting with these four courses:

1) Advanced Theory of International Relations
2) Capita Selecta of your track: European Integration, International Political Economy, International Security, or Global Governance
3) Research seminar 1
4) Research seminar 2

For registration in the courses Advanced Theory of International Relations and Capita Selecta:

Please send an email to the IRIO Secretariat: irio@rug.nl . In the email please indicate the following:

  • Subject: 'Registration in the courses Advanced Theory of International Relations and Capita Selecta'
  • Your name
  • Your student number
  • Your track
  • For students in the track International Relations and International Organization: please indicate the Capita Selecta of your choice ( European Integration, International Political Economy, International Security, or Global Governance)

Registration Research Seminars:

Please choose two research seminars from this brochure and follow the registration procedure indicated in the brochure. If you do not have access to the Student Portal organization “IRIO”, please send an email to the IRIO Secretariat: irio@rug.nl .

You will be informed in the week of 5 February for which research seminars you have been placed.

For students of the track East Asian Studies , you will be starting with these four courses:

1) Advanced Theory of International Relations
2) Capita
Selecta
3) Research Seminar I: Rise of East Asia (compulsory)
4) Research Seminar II:
Europe and China OR Integration Processes in East Asia and in Europe

Step 5 (of 6): Introduction Meeting

Master International Relations

The department would like to invite all students who start the Master International Relations in February to an introduction meeting on Wednesday 7 February from 3 to 5 p.m in the Heymanszaal (Academy Building, Broerstraat 5). During the meeting the programme will be explained more fully and you will have a chance to meet your lecturers and fellow students. We will end the meeting with drinks in a nearby café!


Step 6 (of 6): Get Started

You will be starting your degree programme at the Faculty of Arts on 5 February 2018.

Additional information for International Students who are new to the University of Groningen

Prepare for your stay in Groningen

For a good study start you (with the help of the University of Groningen) will have to arrange a lot of things. Where will you live? Do you need a residence permit or a visa? And what about health insurance?

Welcoming Ceremony for International Students

The University organizes an official Welcoming Ceremony for all new international students. The programme includes short speeches by the President of the university, the Mayor of Groningen and other distinguished guest speakers. After the official ceremony in the Martini Church, an information market will be organized on the square in front of the Academy Building. Students will be hosting lectures about studying in Groningen. Special welcoming packages will be distributed.
