How to apply

The Master's tracks European Integration, International Political Economy, International Security, Geopolitics & Connectivity (formerly: Global Governance), International Relations and International Organizations and East Asian Studies are all specializations within the Master's Degree programme in International Relations (60 ects, course code 60734).

Admission

Degree Admission Application procedure
Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and International Organization (University of Groningen) Direct admission Application and registration via Studielink from 1 June until 30 August for a start in September; before 1 February for a start in February.

University of Groningen Bachelor’s Degree in:

  • American Studies
  • Geschiedenis
For 2015-2016 and master's specialization programme East Asian Studies only : direct admission is possible. For details, please check: http://www.rug.nl/masters/east-asian-studies/admission-and-application
  • Please apply to the Admissions Board by sending an email to irio@rug.nl. Please attach a transcript of records.
  • Apply in Studielink for the programme Master International Relations (East Asian Studies).

University of Groningen Bachelor’s Degree in:

  • Communicatie- en Informatiewetenschappen
  • Europese Talen en Culturen (profiel Politiek en Maatschappij)
  • International Business Management
  • Psychology
  • International and European Law
  • Sociologie

Admission to pre-Master via Admissions Board. The Pre-Master programme will consist of either:

20 ECTS (depending on your degree) :

  • Theory of International Relations (10 ECTS)
  • Methods and Research Practice (10 ECTS).

You can choose to take these courses during your Bachelor as part of the Faculty Minor IRIO (http://www.rug.nl/(...)owpos?opleiding=5065)

30 ECTS (depending on your degree) :

  • Theory of International Relations (10 ECTS)
  • Methods and Research Practice (10 ECTS)
  • Pre-Master Core Module (10 ECTS)

You can choose to take these courses during your Bachelor as part of the Faculty Minor IRIO (http://www.rug.nl/(...)owpos?opleiding=5065)

Relevant other Bachelor's Degree:

a university Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences (including - but not limited to - Economics, Political Science, Development Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Geography),

or

an internationally oriented university Bachelor's degree such as International Relations, Regional Studies, European/International Law, or (Modern) History are eligible to apply.

Students with a relevant non-Dutch Bachelor’s Degree, please follow Application procedure 3 (see below)

Application procedure

Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and International Organization (University of Groningen)

You can enrol via Studielink for the specialization of your choice (International Relations, course code 60734) before the start in September or February.

Application procedure 1

Students with a University of Groningen Bachelor's Degree in:

  • American Studies
  • Communicatie- en Informatiewetenschappen
  • Europese Talen en Culturen (profiel Politiek en Maatschappij)
  • Geschiedenis
  • International Business Management
  • Psychology
  • Law
  • Sociologie

should apply via the online application form and attach the following documents:

  • letter of motivation (in Dutch or English)
  • degree certificate*
  • transcript of records
  • two letters of recommendation
  • a copy of a substantial paper, preferably of Bachelor’s thesis
  • your Curriculum Vitae/Resume, including your personal details, previous education (list of all schools / institutions which have issued diplomas and dates of attendance) and relevant work experience.
  • in case you completed or are participating in the IRIO Minor courses Theory of International Relations and/or Methods and Research Practice and/or Pre-master Core Module , please indicate this.     

*) If you have not yet completed your Bachelor programme, but you expect to complete it before 31 August (or 31 January), please send in a transcript of your records obtained so far and mention your expected graduation date.

On the basis of your application the Admissions Board will determine whether:

  • direct admission to the Master's Degree programme is possible
  • you must first complete the pre-Master's programme (or parts thereof)
  • you cannot be admitted

Application procedure 2

Students with a relevant Dutch university Bachelor's Degree should apply via the online application form and attach the following documents:

  • letter of motivation (in Dutch or English)
  • degree certificate*
  • transcript of records
  • two letters of recommendation
  • a copy of a substantial paper, preferably of Bachelor’s thesis
  • your Curriculum Vitae/Resume, including your personal details, previous education (list of all schools / institutions which have issued diplomas and dates of attendance) and relevant work experience.

Application procedure 3

All students with a non-Dutch university degree must at first apply online . In addition to the standard required documents , the IRIO Admissions Board also requires:

  • a copy of an English language test result. All students, except native speakers, must have a minimum TOEFL score of 92-93 (internet-based), IELTS: a minimum score of 6.5, or a minimum Cambridge score of C1/B2 (please note that minimum scores on individual components in tests will apply). The only exception could be made for students with a BA/MA diploma from a University in an officially English speaking country.
  • a copy of your Bachelor Thesis or another sample of academic writing (about 15 to 20 pages). In case your BA Thesis or essay is written in another language than English (or Dutch), please send us a  5-10 pages summary of it in English, translated by yourself. Please upload this document in Step 9: 'Additional documents' of the Online Admission System (OAS). Don't forget to mention your name on the summary!

  • you must first complete the pre-Master's programme (or parts thereof)
  • you cannot be admitted
