Four ECHO grants awarded
NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, has awarded four ECHO project grants each worth EUR 240,000 to researchers at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (formerly known as the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) of the University of Groningen. The grants offer the opportunity to carry out a high quality science driven research project. In this way a challenging scientific idea can be pursued, a new research area can be opened up or a scientific innovation can be established.
In the focus area ‘Chemistry related to biology/medical sciences’, ECHO grants have been awarded to:
• Prof. D.J. Slotboom − Vitamin intake by bacteria
• Prof. A.J.M. Driessen − How membrane proteins end up in the membrane
• Prof. A.J. Minnaard − Synthesis of crenarchaeol, the most common organic molecule on earth
And in the focus area ‘Chemistry related to physics/ materials’ an ECHO grant has been awarded to:
• Prof. T.T.M. Palstra - New spintronics materials
