Clean Energy Transition Partnership funding for reducing gas emissions

Together with partners, Dr. Anatoli Mokhov of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (RUG) has received EU-NWO 'Clean Energy Transition Partnership' funding of 3 million euros to reduce gas emissions and avoid harmful flaring. The project, coordinated by high-tech start-up company Mitis (Belgium) focuses on non-catalytic reforming of methane and oxy-fuel combustion.
Other partners are Research Institute OWI Science for Fuels (Aachen, Germany) and University of Mons (Belgium). Mokhov receives a total funding of EUR 300,000.
New innovative system
By developing a high-efficient hybrid power generating system, the use of flared gas - often wasted in industrial processes - can be transformed. The consortium's innovative approach integrates a micro-gas turbine with a SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) in a hybrid cycle, offering a double win: avoiding harmful flaring and significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions through advanced carbon capture technology. To this end, Mokhov will explore processes for high-temperature methane reforming and oxyfuel combustion.

Through broad European calls, the Clean Energy Transition (CET) Partnership aims to contribute to the European ambition of becoming a climate neutral continent by 2050 by promoting the transition to clean energy. NWO has been participating in this European partnership since its inception in September 2022.
