Prof Marleen Kamperman
Prof. marleen Kamperman

Marleen Kamperman, professor of Polymer Science, has been appointed as a new scientific member of The Royal Holland Society of Sciences ( KHMW : Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen). KHMW members are responsible for organising scientific activities that reduce the distance between citizens and science.

Prof. Marleen Kamperman heads the Polymer Science group within the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen. Her group is positioned at the interface of chemistry, biology and physics and is interested in the biologically inspired processing and synthesis of polymeric materials.

Silk from spiders as inspiration

Kampermans team is developing processing tools to mimic the environmentally benign processing found in nature for the design of a wide variety of materials, including fibers, rods and scaffolds. Kamperman is particularly interested in mimicking spider silk processing, using microfluidics to understand the design rules and using novel 3D printing techniques to produce the bioinspired silk.

Bridge between society and science

The KHMW is the oldest 'Learned Society' in the Netherlands, which has been promoting science by bridging science and society since 1752. Every year, new members are appointed in February. In addition to scientific members, these are also societal members. The KHMW currently has about 550 scientific members and over 400 societal members.

For the full list of new appointments, visit the KHMW's website.

Engineering Smart Decisions for a Dynamic World

Dynamical systems, i.e. mathematical models that describe how things evolve over time, are at the heart of much of the modern world. The real challenge, however, lies in shaping the systems’ behaviour to achieve a specific goal.
