Adrenal tumours are present in around five percent of the population and are often found incidentally when an abdominal scan is made for an unrelated reason. It is difficult to determine from the scan whether such a tumour is benign or malignant. A new method uses an algorithm that differentiates between the two tumour types based on the pattern of steroid metabolites in the patient’s urine. The method, which was published this summer, is just one of the many uses for the algorithm, says Michael Biehl, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Groningen.

Simulations by scientists from the University of Groningen and Utrecht University showed that it is unlikely that the North Atlantic Current , which is responsible for the mild climate in northwestern Europe, will come to a complete stop. However, there is a 15 percent likelihood that there will be a temporary change in the current in the next 100 years.

Research published in the Journal of Animal Science has shown analysis method can accurately use phenotype and gene data to predict the age at which pigs will be ready for slaughter. A recent study by Ahmad Alsahaf, George Azzopardi, Bart Ducro, Egiel Hanenberg, Roel F Veerkamp and Nicolai Petkov examining the accuracy of phenotypic and genetic data in predicting slaughter age was prompted by the fact that correctly forecasting the growth of pigs can help determine things like feed costs and pen space requirements. Growth-rate predictions could also be used in other ways – for example, to identify which growth-rate factors might be more important than others.

As well as being Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Jean-Paul van Oosten is also a PhD student. His work revolves around highly diverse ‘mountains of data’, in which smart systems recognize patterns and make connections. He does this using Machine Learning (ML). ML is the term used for the self-learning capacity of intelligent computers, which allows data to be enriched. One of the applications discovered by Van Oosten and his colleagues is a method for selecting the best candidates for a job from hundreds of curricula vitae and letters of application.
