Double Degree Mechanical Engineering: new partnership with Universitas Gadjah Mada

18 November 2025

The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) at the University of Groningen (UG) has signed a new agreement with Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Indonesia to establish a double degree programme within the Masters degree programme Mechanical Engineering. This agreement reflects a longstanding collaboration between the UG and UGM, and further deepens international opportunities for both students and academic staff.

Students enrolled in this programme will study one year at their home university and one year at the partner institution. Upon completion, participants will be granted diplomas from both universities. Initially, it is anticipated that most students will start at UGM and complete their second year in Groningen. However, the programme is equally open to UG students who wish to experience studying and living in Indonesia.

Collaboration with UGM

The agreement builds on more than two decades of fruitful cooperation between the UG and UGM, which includes joint research projects, student and staff mobility, summer schools, and the supervision of PhD candidates.

UGM is a valued partner within the UG Strategic Partnership Framework. Initiatives such as the 'Hydrogen Energy Summer School' and ongoing research into global issues like sustainable energy show the broad and productive nature of this collaboration. In the near future, this collaboration is expected to expand to include double degree PhD projects in additional fields, such as Mechanical Engineering.

With this double degree, graduates will gain the unique experience of studying and collaborating in two leading academic environments, enabling them to apply their skills in an international context.
