Pharmacy

Many diseases can be treated effectively with medicines. Our Bachelor programme is the first step towards becoming an all-round pharmaceutical expert and a career in the pharmacy or drug research lab.

Our Bachelor degree programme in Pharmacy combines chemistry with biology and medicine. Simply put, you will learn what medicines are, how they work, and how they are developed and administered. You will learn about human (patho)physiology, and the pharmacist's role in the quest for new compounds to prevent, halt or cure disease. Based on a strong research tradition, our multidisciplinary programme provides a solid scientific foundation for students. If you're interested in healthcare, the programme includes courses about the indispensable contribution of the pharmacist to patient care. If drug research is more your thing, the programme will open the door to the molecular world of pharmacy and how you can explore it. Students can choose from elective courses to individualize their programmes to their own specific interests.

Our BSc degree programme offers you the academic basis to help you on your way to becoming a versatile healthcare professional. You will gain the tools to contribute to improved healthcare through medicines and therapies tailored to the individual patient.

We do fun things together and encourage each other to study

'I moved into student accommodation as soon as I started university. In the first year, I concentrated on studying and exams. In the second year, I joined a committee of the study association, Pharmaciae Sacrum.

I enjoyed it so much that I went on to become the President. I had to temporarily suspend my studies for this, but I gained so much experience from it that I would happily do it again. Together with some fellow students, we have established a fraternity for Pharmacy students. We do fun things together, but also encourage each other to study.

I have also had various jobs on the side, usually associated with pharmacy. I have worked at various pharmacies all over the Netherlands, and I am currently working in the pharmacy at the Wilhelmina hospital in Assen. I have thus seen several pharmacies from the inside, even before my first official internship. I can really recommend getting a part-time job, although I can usually only work weekends due to the many lab courses I have during the week.’

Marjolein Kroonen does clinical medicine research with PRA Health Sciences in Groningen. Pharmaceutical companies who wish to test a new substance go to PRA Health Sciences to have trials conducted with human subjects.

As project manager, Marjolein ensures that the various departments do what is required of them after an order for a trial has been received, so that volunteers can be recruited, funding can be arranged, a protocol can be drafted, the medical staff in the clinic can be instructed and the results can be processed. She maintains contact with the client throughout the entire research project.

Practicals give a better idea of what your work will look like

'I knew that I wanted to do something in healthcare from an early age, but I wasn't interested in treating patients directly, so Pharmacy was a logical choice. This programme offers plenty of specializations and the career opportunities in healthcare appealed to me as well.

Each course unit takes three weeks, after which you sit an exam. I like the fact that you focus on only one course unit at a time. I also enjoy the practicals; they give you a better idea of what your work will look like.

I have been living at home, because I wanted to know if this was the right programme for me first. But now that I have my BSA, I’m thinking of getting student accommodation and joining a student association.’

    A varied, dynamic profession

"I make sure that patients are administered the right medicines and that they are used in an accurate, safe way. In practice this means that I work closely with specialists, doctors and nurses, and that I think along with them about medication. We also produce medicines for out patients at the hospital pharmacy, and we examine patients' blood in the event of problems and for some specific drugs. The profession of hospital pharmacist is highly varied and dynamic."
