Staff members with discipline Medicine, Research & Experimental

Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

I am developing jointly with my supervisor's team research about how exposure to oxidative stress develops mitochondrial failure in severely ill patients and how this is related to long-term outcomes. Previously, I worked as an epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health in Colombia, over the consolidation, synthesis, and analysis of pharmacoepidemiological information related to the immunization process against COVID-19; as well as research activities during the pandemic. I was an instructor at University ICESI in Cali, Colombia, teaching physician students the fundamentals statements in epidemiology. For almost three years, I worked in prenatal and leukemic state diagnoses by reading the karyotype using the cytogenetic techniques for reading G bands. I have training in lymphocyte culture from bone marrow, peripheral blood and amniotic cell culture. I participated in the diagnosis issue and the correlation of results with the patient's pathology. I have experience in the clinical laboratory on quality assurance and maintenance, chemistry, hematology, immunology, coagulation, and immunohematology regarding the analysis of human samples. My first work was as a microbiology analyst in areas of bacteriology, parasitology, and mycology: analysing raw water, water indifferent stations of the disinfection process, water supply network, pool water, stagnant water. Nynke Smidt studied physiotherapy (cum laude) and Human Movement Sciences, specializing in Epidemiology. She is associated professor in Epidemiology, and leader of the unit Health Behaviour Epidemiology of the department of epidemiology and the research program Life Course Epidemiology of the research Institute SHARE. She is board member of the department of Epidemiology, SHARE research institute and the Dutch Society of Epidemiology. She is affiliated researcher at Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in The Hague. She is principal investigator of the FINGER-NL study (location site UMCG) investigating the effectiveness of a multidomain lifestyle intervention on the cognitive performance of older adults, and she is currently setting up Ageinglines, a new subcohort within Lifelines aiming to investigate pathways of biological ageing among 4500 participants (data collection starts in January 2024). She is part of various regional and national consortia: Leernetwerk Leefomgeving Groningen (LEGrO), MOCIA (Maintaining Optimal Cognitive function In Ageing), FINGER-NL (https://mocia.nl/onderzoeken/finger-nl/), Netherlands Dementia Prevention Initiative (NDPI) and BIRD-NL (Beinvloedbare Risicofactoren voor Preventie van Dementie – Nederlands Consortium voor kennisontwikkeling). Her main research focus on lifestyle determinants of healthy (cognitive) ageing trajectories. These lifestyle factors include physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep, alcohol consumption, social and cognitive activities. Data of population-based cohort studies are used to investigate the (biological) pathways of cognitive decline over the life course. The main aim is to provide knowledge how to add more healthy life years to the general population, especially to those with a lower education and overweight. She is co-author of over 115 peer reviewed international publications (H-index -Web of Science: 32 dd. May 2023) For publication: Smidt N[Author] - Search Results - PubMed (nih.gov)

Francine Vos started in April 2022 as a PhD candidate with a research project on infections of vascular and breast prostheses. It is a multi-centre, cross-border collaborative project involving the UMCG, the Medical Center Leeuwarden, Nij Smellinghe Drachten, Ommelander Hospital Groningen, Klinikum Oldenburg (DE), PIUS Hospital (DE) and Bonifatius Lingen (DE). The incidence of vascular and breast prosthesis infections, the pathogens with associated resistance patterns and the surgical outcomes are mapped. A comparison will be made between the different sizes of hospitals (university versus peripheral) and the different countries (the Netherlands versus Germany). The aim is to establish the best practice for both countries, with which an evidence-based protocol can be drawn up for the prevention and treatment of vascular and breast prosthesis infections.
