Chair: Ecophysiology of marine microalgae. Key words: marine phytoplankton, marine carbon cycle, marine polar ecology, global change, harmful algal blooms, (micro)algal applications. I am interested in all factors that control the growth and diversity of marine phytoplankton. In practice I am involved in projects that deal with climate change and (Ant)Arctic algal productivity and diversity, harmful algal blooms and algal applications. We execute experimental work in the lab, based on our extensive culture collection. Furthermore, we participate in field campaigns, for example to the open Atlantic, both polar regions, or Indonesia. For information on current projects click Projects in the menu on the left. For updates on our work check http://www.rug.nl/research/ocean-ecosystems or Like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/OceanEcosystems). Note that due to my upcoming retirement I do not accept new PhD students.

The intestinal mucosa is exposed to fluctuations in oxygen levels due to constantly changing rates of oxygen demand and supply and its juxtaposition with the anoxic environment of the intestinal lumen. This frequently results in a state of hypoxia in the healthy mucosa even in the physiologic state. Furthermore, pathophysiologic hypoxia (which is more severe and extensive) is associated with chronic inflammatory diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), a ubiquitously expressed regulator of cellular adaptation to hypoxia, is central to both the adaptive and the inflammatory responses of cells of the intestinal mucosa in IBD patients. In my PhD, I am interested in studying how microenvironmental factors in the intestine modulate intestinal epithelial HIF-1α activation and influence epithelial homeostasis.

Corinna Glasner is scientific project manager for the leadpartner of the two INTERREG V projects EurHealth-1Health and health-i-care and research associate at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention. Her expertise lies in molecular microbiology and local, national and international epidemiology of pathogens. She successfully completed her PhD at the end of 2014 with numerous publications on the subtyping and genomic population structure of major pathogens of hospital infections, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Here she led u.a. Europe-wide prevalence of S. aureus and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE). The avoidance of antibiotic resistance and the strengthening of infection prevention are also her area of interest during this time. Since 2016, Corinna Glasner has been a central part of German-Dutch cooperation in the current INTERREG project EurHealth-1Health and health-i-care and is learning and living the opportunities of this exciting border region every single day.

I am a community microbial ecologist with expertise in community composition of a variety of different soil organisms. My primary interest is in assessing the relationship between microbial and above-ground plant communities in semi-natural ecosystems and low-input agriculture.

I have a broad knowledge in plant and microbial (bacteria and fungi) ecology and have competence in bioinformatics and data analysis of molecular data.
