Summary:

The project on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) started within the framework of cooperation between University of Groningen and University of PJ Safarik Kosice in 2003.

The research team consisting of neurologist and psychologist looked on physical and mental performance, impairments, utilization of care, physical, mental and social well-being, cognitive abilities, personality and health-related behaviors in MS patients. Data collection took from December 2003 to February 2007. Into the sample of MS patients were included 233 MS patients from regional hospitals and outpatient clinics. Results were presented at national and international conferences. Three articles were published on this topic in (S)SCI journals, and two were submitted. The articles described that more disabled and older MS patient, the poorer their perceived health status was. The more depressed the patients, the worse their perceived health status was. Mastery is a meaningful variable determining perceived health status, especially in MS patients of 45 years and over. Furthermore, social support from significant others positively influences physical health status, while social support from family and friends was found to have more positive consequences on mental health status in MS patients. Therefore health care professionals' education and counseling in supporting the coping strategies of MS patients are essential for good patient management.
