2. English language requirements
The level of English required for all courses is:

CEFR B2/C1 or
-
TOEFL iBT 92 (minimum of 21 for each section) or
-
IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 for each section)

For some specific Master courses: Cambridge C1 (Advanced)*
While you are in Groningen, you can enrol in our course "Academic English for International Students", which focuses on academic skills in English. We recommend this course for students with a level of English proficiency below the required B2/C1 level. The minimum level required for this course is B2.
How to inform us about your level of English?
EU Erasmus+ students:
Add a valid language test to your online application with the required English proficiency level, this is either a(n):

Accepted English language certificate (mentioned above) or
-
Erasmus+ OLS test result or
-
Europass self-assessment (signed by the coordinator from your home university) or
-
Statement from the coordinator from your home university or
-
Certified transcript of records, indicating English CEFR level (minimum B2/C1)
Non-EU students (including Erasmus+ ICM):
Add an English language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge) of sufficient level (as indicated above) to your online application.
Native speakers of English:
No language certificate required. Only applicable if English is (demonstrably) your mother tongue, e.g. through your nationality.
*Additional requirements for some specific Master courses:
Students who want to enroll in Master courses taught by the departments of Linguistics, Journalism, and American Studies must have a level of proficiency of:

TOEFL 100 (minimum of 25 for writing skills); or

IELTS 7 (minimum of 6.5 for each section); or

CEFR C1; or
-
Cambridge C1 Advanced
For Master courses at the department of English the requirements are:

TOEFL 110 (minimum of 25 for writing skills) or

IELTS 8 (minimum of 7.5 for each section) or

CEFR C1 or
-
Cambridge C1 Advanced
