Welcome to the Department of English Language and Culture!
This is an exciting time to come to Groningen. Our University is rising through the rankings, and the Department of English has been steadily growing over the last years. We can draw on the distinguished tradition of being the first English programme in the Netherlands (1876) while we continue to innovate in teaching and research: our ground-breaking MA programme in Writing, Editing, and Mediating has won much praise and our colleagues have secured significant research grants.
As the top-rated English Department in the Netherlands, we continue to attract dedicated students from across the country, Europe, and abroad. We offer our students a complete experience of English language and literature: from its beginnings to the present, from the British Isles to the farthest reaches of the English-speaking world – our courses explore the English language and its literatures in both time and space.
Our staff members, embedded in international research networks, are working at the forefront of the field: book history, first and second language acquisition, usage-based linguistics and other theoretical linguistics, women’s writing, medieval and early modern literature, Romanticism, Modernism, English proficiency, and travel writing are some of our strengths.
The Groningen English community extends far beyond the classroom. Our students and staff members are involved in such events as the Diever Shakespeare Festival or Groningen’s fine English-language troupe Stranger Things Have Happened, whereas the flourishing student organisation (NUTS) and our vibrant alumni society ensure that you will be a part of our community both during and after your studies here.
We look forward to seeing you in Groningen!
