Admission requirements

as of September 2021

General and track specific admission criteria

Below we specify general criteria (that apply to all master tracks in Psychology in Groningen) and track specific criteria.

Please note that a completed bachelor in Psychology at a Dutch Research University (among which University of Groningen) will by default be considered to satisfy the general criteria. So, in case you do or did such a bachelor in Psychology, you meet the general admission criteria listed below.

However, in addition to the general criteria, for some tracks there are track specific criteria. These criteria should be satisfied by ALL students interested in those tracks, so please carefully inspect the track-specific criteria.

General admission criteria

  • Bachelor Diploma of a Research University* ;
  • English language requirements;
  • At least 60 EC or 65 EC (for all Clinical tracks) covering substantive psychology courses (i.e., courses dealing with psychological theories and application, not with skills, philosophy or history);
  • At least 15 EC covering statistics**, in which you were at least taught on the following topics (in reasonable depth):
    - Basic descriptive statistical techniques,
    -
    Basic graphical statistical techniques,
    -
    Basic inferential statistical techniques (confidence intervals, significance testing),
    -
    Nonparametric statistic,
    -
    Simple and Multiple regression,
    -
    Logistic regression,
    -
    ANOVA (One- and Two way designs),
    -
    Repeated measures ANOVA,
    -
    ANCOVA,
    -
    Moderator analysis (= regression analysis including interactions of quantitative predictors).
  • At least 10 EC covering psychological research methodology:
    This should include theoretical concepts in research methodology (5 EC) and research ethics, as well as practical training (5 EC) in carrying out a full research project (i.e., deriving and formulating a research question, designing a study (which should be at least partially quantitative), collecting data, analyzing results, reporting the whole project, finishing with a discussion and conclusion section)

  • At least 5 EC covering the study of reliability and validity of psychological tests. (discussing at least classical test theory);
  • At least 5 EC covering theory/philosophy of science and/or history of psychology.

* Met diploma’s HBO Toegepaste Psychologie is in bijzondere gevallen toelating met een aanvullend programma mogelijk.

** only for the THP track it holds that, if the high level of statistics knowledge is not reached, partial compensation is possible by additional knowledge of Theory of Science and/or History of Psychology and/or Qualitative methods).

Track-specific criteria

Clinical Psychology, Klinische Psychologie and Clinical Forensic Psychology & Victimology | Clinical Neuropsychology and Klinische Neuropsychologie | Ontwikkelingspsychologie | All other tracks

>> for Clinical Psychology, Klinische Psychologie and Clinical Forensic Psychology & Victimology
  • Out of 65 EC covering substantive psychology courses (not skills courses), at least 20 EC covering the field of clinical psychology, comparable to the University of Groningen courses:
    - Clinical psychology (ENG, 5 EC),
    - Klinische psychologie (NL, 5 EC),
    - Understanding psychopathology (5 EC),
    - Cognitive behavioral processes across disorders (5 EC),
    - Psychopathology: symptoms, classifications and diagnosis (5 EC),
    - Diagnostiek in de Klinische Psychologie (NL, 5 EC),
    - Introduction to cognitive behavioural therapies (5 EC),
    - Overzicht van psychotherapie (NL, 5 EC),
    - Diagnosis and assessment (ENG, 5 EC),
    - Forensische psychologie (NL, 5 EC), Capita Selecta Forensic psychology,

    - Forensic psychology (ENG, literature study, 5 EC),
    - Seksuologie (NL, 5 EC), Capita Selecta Human sexuality (literature study, ENG, 5 EC),
    - Deception in Clinical settings (5 EC);
  • At least 5 EC on communication and diagnostic skills, comparable to the University of Groningen course: Communication and Diagnostic Skills (5 EC);
  • A bachelor thesis or comparable written treatise (9 EC or more).

  • Out of 65 EC covering substantive psychology courses (not skills courses), at least 15 EC covering theory and practical issues in the field of Clinical Neuropsychology, comparable to the University of Groningen courses:
    - Introduction to Clinical Neuropsychology (5 EC),
    - Clinical Neuropsychology (5 EC),
    - Gerontology (5 EC),
    - Developmental Neuropsychology (5 EC),
    - School Neuropsychology: Mind, Brain and Education (5 EC);
  • Out of 65 EC covering substantive psychology courses (not skills courses), at least 5 EC on psychopathology, comparable to the University of Groningen courses:
    - Psychopathology: symptoms, classifications and diagnosis (5 EC),
    - Understanding psychopathology (5 EC),
    - Cognitive behavioral processes across disorders (5 EC).
  • At least 5 EC on communication and diagnostic skills. Comparable to the University of Groningen course Communication and Diagnostic Skills (5 EC);
>> for Ontwikkelingspsychologie
  • Out of 60 EC covering substantive psychology, at least 10 EC in the field of Developmental Psychology, comparable to the University of Groningen courses:
    - Ontwikkelingspsychologie (5 EC),
    - Persoonlijke documenten en de constructie van de levensloop (5 EC),
    - Interventions in individual development (5 EC),
    - Theorieën over ontwikkelingsgebieden (5 EC),
    - Diagnostiek in de ontwikkelings-psychologische praktijk (5 EC)
    - Ontwikkeling, opvoeding en onderwijs (5 EC).
  • At least 5 EC on communication and diagnostic skills. Comparable to the University of Groningen course Communication and Diagnostic Skills (5 EC);
  • Please note that if you do not satisfy the criterion of 60 EC Substantive psychology courses, you can compensate 5 EC of this by track-related non-Psychology courses (i.e. non-Psychology courses that are directly relevant to the track Ontwikkelingspsychologie).

Satisfying the general admission criteria is enough. Furthermore, please note that if you do not satisfy the criterion of 60 EC Substantive psychology courses, you can compensate up to 15 EC of this by track-related non-Psychology courses (i.e. non-Psychology courses that are directly relevant to the track you have chosen).
