Anthropology, an introduction

ECTS: 7,5

Anthropology deals with humans as social and cultural beings. Everywhere humans empirically organize themselves thereby giving rise to various forms of social structure which anthropologists study under rubrics like kinship, age, gender, caste or class. Further, humans not only arrange themselves in groups of various kinds but also devise rules which are supposed to regulate social life, and beyond that create an ideal vision of their society in the shape of religious beliefs and cosmologies. Anthropologists study and compare how all this is achieved – and contested – around the globe, in the present as well as in history. The course provides students with an overview of important themes, concepts and methods.
