Groningen Solar Racing team is preparing for solar-powered car competition in Australia

04 October 2019

After two years of hard work, the Groningen Top Dutch Solar Racing team has arrived in Australia. The team consists of students of the University of Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and secondary vocational education (MBO) and is currently preparing for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia: a 3,000-kilometer journey across Australia in a solar-powered car.

The team, including UG Physics student Friso Resink, takes on this challenge with their ‘Green Lightning’, as they named the solar car they built. The route leads from Darwin on the north coast to Adelaide on the south coast. The team has seven days to complete the route. From October 13 to 20, the Green Lightning will try to get as far as possible every day between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

FSE student

Each member of the team has a special role that makes the project a success. The same applies to Physics student at the Faculty of Science and Engineering Friso Resink. Together with another team member he is responsible for the strategy. In short, this means that together with one of the partners he has developed a model in which all kinds of different data are processed. Based on that data, the model calculates the speed at which the solar car must drive to complete the race.
