NWO grant for energy smart offices
Within the NWO Smart Energy Systems (SES) research programme, a grant of 450,000 euro has been awarded to the research into Energy Smart Offices headed by Prof. Marco Aiello (Distributed Systems, Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science). The research is being conducted in cooperation with the Eindhoven University of Technology, Philips Research and IBM Benelux.
Substantial energy savings in office buildings could be achieved by building-wide collaborative switching and regulating installations and appliances tailored to actual needs. The research project on Energy Smart Offices will develop a scalable energy-aware framework that incorporates dynamic occupant activity recognition and building context knowledge to adapt office installations and appliances to saving energy.
IT contributes to energy saving
The aim of the SES research programme is to investigate how IT can contribute to further sustainability by reducing energy consumption.The research programme is a cooperation between the NWO division Physical (EW), Technology Foundation STW, ICTRegie and the NWO Governing Board.
Innovative
A total of 13 applications were granted amounts ranging between 210,000 and 750,000 euro. The applications were assessed by an international team of scientists using the following criteria: scientific quality, innovative character, utilization (SES compartment 1) and relevance (SES compartment 2). Business is helping finance the grants, which is a condition for the application-oriented research in compartment 1.
