I failed my exams

decorative image

Have you failed an exam? That happens, and it is usually not a problem. That’s what resits are for. Just be careful not to let too many exams pile up, and keep your study schedule realistic.

For example:

  • 3 exams + one resit = perfectly fine
  • 3 exams + 3 resits in one block = not realistic, and it is likely to cause even more study delays

Have you failed or been unable to take several exams due to special circumstances? Are you concerned about your BSA (binding study advice)? Select the option below that best suits your situation.

Inform your study advisor or student counsellor

Inform your study advisor, who is the first point of contact within your programme for personal guidance and advice on study planning, study choice, BSA standards, special circumstances, and study delays. In some cases, the study advisor will refer you to a student counsellor.

The student counsellor is not affiliated with any particular programme or faculty and is therefore the point of contact for all University of Groningen students seeking advice and support in relation to personal circumstances, disabilities, or other study-related issues that you are unable or unwilling to resolve within your programme. You can discuss your personal situation with the student counsellor and find out about available financial (and other) arrangements, facilities, and resources.

Visit this document to learn more about whom you should contact and what the difference is between the study advisor and the student counsellor.

Training courses and workshops

  • At the Student Service Centre (SSC), you can participate in workshops, training courses, that are free (or almost free) of charge. You will receive many of practical tips that you can apply immediately. There are many different topics covering stress management, personal development, and self-discipline.

  • Prepare for a successful career with Career Services. They offer workshops and training courses, but also mock interviews and individual coaching. Career Services is completely free for UG students and recent alumni. Take a look at the central services offered by Career Services, or the services available to your faculty via the career officers.

Study delays due to specific situations

Are you concerned about medical or mental health issues, a family situation, or other circumstances that are having an impact on your study progress? We are here to support you:

  • Do not wait for resits, but report the circumstances and/or study delay to your study advisor as soon as possible
  • If you have a delay of 15 ECTS or more, make an appointment with a student counsellor:

Study delay due to educational force majeure

  • Are you experiencing a delay due to educational force majeure  (this means that your study programme is not feasible)? For example, this could be because your thesis supervisor is absent (for an extended period) or because your study programme has made a mistake. If so, make an appointment with a student counsellor:
  • Read more about financial compensation for study delays due to educational force majeure here:
