I failed my exams

Did you fail an exam? That happens and is usually not a problem; that's what resits are for.

Just be careful not to “stack” too many exams and keep your study schedule realistic. For example:

  • 3 exams + one resit = perfectly fine!
  • 3 exams + 3 resits in one block = not realistic and often causes even more study delays.

Have you failed or been unable to take several exams due to special circumstances? Or are you concerned about your BSA (Binding Study Advice)? Then choose the option below that best suits your situation.

Study advisor & Student counsellor

Inform your study advisor, who is the first point of contact within your programme for personal guidance and advice on study planning, study choice, BSA standards, special circumstances and study delays. In some cases, the study advisor will refer you to a student counsellor.

The student counsellor is not affiliated with any particular programme or faculty and is therefore the point of contact for all University of Groningen students seeking advice and support in relation to personal circumstances, disabilities or other study-related issues that you are unable or unwilling to resolve within your programme. You can discuss your personal situation with the student counsellor and find out about available (financial) arrangements, facilities and resources.

Check this document to find out more about who you need to contact and what the difference is between the study advisor and the student counsellor.

Improve your study skills? Stop procrastinating? Handle stress better?

Are you curious about how you can improve your study skills and, for example, stop procrastinating, write better academically or study more effectively? Or do you want to cope better with stress, suffer less from fear of failure, or gain more confidence in social settings? Then check out the range of training courses, workshops and online self-help modules offered by the UG's Student Service Centre. Joining a study or thesis support group is also an option.

Study delays due to specific situations, such as medical/mental health issues, family circumstances, or a disability

Are you concerned about medical or mental health issues, a family situation, or other circumstances that are impacting your study progress? We are here to support you:

  • Do not wait for resits, but report the circumstances and/or study delay to your study advisor as soon as possible

  • 15 ECTS delay or more? Make an appointment with a student counsellor:

Study delay due to educational force majeure

  • Are you experiencing a delay due to educational force majeure  (it means that your study programme is not feasible)? For example, because your thesis supervisor is absent (for an extended period) or because your study programme has made a mistake? If so, make an appointment with a student counsellor:

  • Read more about financial compensation for study delays due to educational force majeure here:

Are you a non-EU/EEAstudent?

Please check: www.rug.nl/momi for more information regarding study delay in relation to your resident permit.
