Building & location

In June 2016, the former beursgebouw (trade centre) on Wirdumerdijk 34 in Leeuwarden was chosen as the new faculty building of the Friesian Faculty, and in November 2017, the UG and the Municipality of Leeuwarden signed the transfer of ownership.

The research and education of UG Campus Fryslân revolves around the international, national and regional dimensions of issues. The central location in the region facilitates cooperation on Frisian hotspots: water technology, agro food & dairy (sustainable agriculture), multilingualism, tourism & recreation, high tech manufacturing, governance & safety and liveability.

Historical building

For the past few decades the ‘Beursgebouw’ - a former trade centre designed in 1880 by the famous urban architect Thomas Romein- has served as a public library.

This new university building is neoclassical with a lot of allure in a beautiful and prominent location in the city. It is a huge rectangular building with many large open spaces, with a steel frame (of a later date) with intermediate floors.
