Performance - sustainability in research and education
It is imperative to equip the next generation with an education that will help them understand, care about and address the global risks we all face.
What is education but the construction of opportunities for people to develop the skills and mindsets that help them live in ways that advance worthy goals? This idea dates back at least to the sixteenth-century pedagogue, Jan Comenius, who argued, in his Didactica Magna, that we should educate all, so we could have peace in the world. This is why sustainability plays an important role in research and education.
The UG, together with the U4 universities, organised a Summer School in 2018. Nineteen international students came to Groningen to learn about and work on sustainability.
Lectures, Excursions and Movie nights:
An important goal of the Green Office is to inform and excite students and staff members about sustainability and transfer knowledge on this topic. We want to inspire people to implement sustainability into their lives, both in their private life and at the university. We hope to achieve this by organising interesting lectures, excursions and movie nights that will inspire people to think about their way of living and how sustainable it is. We want to bring the concept of sustainability to life and show people what sustainability means to different people. We try to discuss both serious and feel-good topics to present a broad image of sustainability. Take a look at our calendar (on the homepage) for information about our latest activities. Do you have suggestions for us for ideas or topics that you would like to be discussed in one of our lectures? Then by all means contact us!
Course Green Growth:
The Sustainability Myth Busters Course is an innovative program about sustainability with inspiring lecturers from different faculties of the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and people from the work field. The course is an unique opportunity for students and staff members to learn about sustainability in science, research and practice. Read more about what we did in 2018 or have a look at programme here. The third edition of the course will start September 2019.
Sustainable research UG:
We provide an overview of research that has been conducted on sustainability. Students can have research published there. This way we can inspire other students and put sustainable research in the spotlight.
