Green Office participates in international GreenMetric Workshop in Nice
Last week, from 18 to 20 June, the international UI GreenMetric Workshop took place in Nice. This annual international conference offers universities from all over the world the opportunity to meet and exchange knowledge in the field of sustainability. This year, the conference was hosted by the Université Côte d’Azur.

On behalf of the UG, which is ranked 3rd in the UI GreenMetric ranking of 2024, a delegation from the Green Office was present. During the conference, the physical awards of 2023 and 2024 were also presented, as these had only been received digitally so far.
Sharing knowledge
The conference was a gathering of universities from all over the world that are committed to making their policies, operations and curriculum more sustainable. All participating universities do this from their own political and local reality, which leads to major differences between them. This makes sharing knowledge and experiences extra valuable, both for universities that are at the beginning of a reform, as well as for universities that already have sustainability in their DNA.

The UI GreenMetric Ranking
The UI GreenMetric Ranking was established by Universitas Indonesia to draw attention to sustainability in the policies and activities of universities. The participating universities, 1477 from 95 different countries in 2024, are assessed and ranked based on numerical data. The Green Office annually provides the necessary data to participate in the ranking.
The UG has been in the top five of the ranking since 2021. In 2018, 2019 and 2020 the University ended up in the top ten. The fact that the UG is increasingly committed to sustainability is reflected in the results of the ranking.
Sustainability at the UG
Sustainability is one of the core values of the University of Groningen. This means that the UG wants to integrate sustainable development into all facets of the University. The ambitions and objectives in the field of sustainability up to and including 2026 can be found in the Sustainability Roadmap. This year, the Green Office will be working on a new sustainability plan for the University.
