Staff members with discipline Ethics
Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

Her work critically analyses how research in psychology and the cognitive sciences has bearing on ethical questions about autonomy, consent, and responsibility. Do implicit biases undermine our autonomy? How can we hold a person responsible without blaming them, and when should we do so? Do failures of empathy undermine morality? When and why is praise patronizing? And, what do the answers to these questions imply for society, criminal justice, and therapy? These are key questions she has addressed in her work.
She also has an interest in the ethics of humor and in the philosophy of emotions.
Currently, she is developing a theory of moral agency in childhood, and initiating a public engagement project called ‘Philosophy with Children, for Adults’ in cooperation with Sparklab.

While pursuing his career in a business environment, he felt the need to reflect more deeply on the pragmatic reality of the organizations he worked for. Thus, Mees sought to deepen his academic knowledge with a master’s in Philosophy in Business at Utrecht University, followed by a PhD at the Ethics Institute of Utrecht University. Both alongside his full-time job at ING.
Mees is an expert on motivational obstacles to taking sustainable action and pathways for individuals, institutions and humanity. As a professor of Practice of Business Ethics, he works in close collaboration with professor of Financial Ethics, Boudewijn de Bruin. Together with the other professors at the EE&F department that focus on topics such as sustainable development, sustainable banking & finance and corporate governance, Mees contributes to setting up, innovating and carrying out education in the field of business ethics. Apart from his educational contributions, he takes part in research projects within the faculty and develops his own research in the field of business ethics.

Prior to joining the University of Groningen, I contributed to two projects as a postdoctoral researcher, one on public life and religious diversity (University of Oxford, 2016-2019) and another on the ethics of voting (Horizon 2020 Grant, Sciences Po Paris, 2019-2020). I completed my PhD at Sciences Po Paris (2016) and was a Fox Fellow at Yale University (2013-2014) and an Alliance visiting scholar at Columbia University (2015).
