A.I. in Education

The Community of Practice A.I. in Education focuses on exploring the implications of artificial intelligence in education. Created in response to the enthusiastic reception of ChatGPT, this community aims to connect various initiatives within the RUG to investigate the challenges and opportunities of AI tools in education.

The mission of the CoP: AI in Education is to create a network between the relevant stakeholders within the RUG (such as faculties, BoExs, schools, research groups and individual researchers, lecturers and education specialists) to collect, generate and spread information on the implications of AI for education.

Our goals

The initial goals of the CoP: AI in Education are to

  • continuously monitor the further development of AI tools relevant for education,
  • analyze the challenges and opportunities these tools create for education,
  • collect and develop strategies to mitigate these challenges and use these opportunities,
  • communicate these strategies to the relevant stakeholders such as faculties, BoExs and individual teachers.

In particular, this will include

  • collecting best practices for incorporating AI tools into teaching
  • flagging assessment methods which can easily be completed with ChatGPT
  • proposing alternative assessment methods which cannot easily be completed with ChatGPT

NAI2TURE

“Network for Accessible and Interdisciplinary AI Transformation at Universities through Research and Exchange”

We are proud to announce that our project "NAI2TURE – Network for Accessible and Interdisciplinary AI Transformation at Universities through Research and Exchange" has been awarded an ENLIGHT Thematic Network Grant 2025!

The project aims to advance digital literacy in higher education through the lens of equity and accessibility. In essence, the project seeks to scale up the existing Community of Practice: AI in Education at the Teaching Academy Groningen to the broader ENLIGHT network level.

The project was lead by the University of Göttingen in partnership with the University of Groningen, Uppsala University, the University of the Basque Country, University of Galway and the University of Bordeaux. Those who participated in the project from the University of Groningen and our CoP were: Dr. Tri Tran, Dr. Miquel Pérez Torres, Dr. Francisco José Castillo Hernández, Jeremy Burman and Dr. Līga Kļaviņa.

Our events

AI in Thesis

The AI in Thesis event marked the first public activity of the Community of Practice (CoP) on A.I. in Education. The event addressed how generative AI is reshaping thesis writing, supervision, assessment, and academic integrity across faculties. Rather than aiming to produce policy proposals or standardized solutions, the event was intentionally designed as an exploratoryforum focused on experience sharing, reflection, and sense-making.

The core objective was to create a cross-faculty space in which educators, thesis coordinators, program leaders, and students could openly discuss emerging practices, uncertainties, and tensions related to AI use in thesis work, with the aim of stimulating informed rethinking of existing thesis processes.

As the inaugural CoP event, AI in Thesis successfully established a shared vocabulary across faculties and surfaced key tensions without forcing premature conclusions. The strong engagement confirmed demand for continued, practice-oriented dialogue. The event provides a foundation for follow-up activities, including supervision-focused workshops, discipline-specific experimentation with assessment formats, and closer collaboration with central educational support and policy units.

An executive summary of the event can be found here!

AI-Week Uppsala University, Sweden

Dr. Tri Tran recently led two interactive workshops on Educational Quality in the AI Era at the AI-Week event, hosted by Uppsala University, Sweden, an ENLIGHT partner. The event, which runs from October 28 to November 6, is organized by the Unit of Academic Teaching and Learning. Dr. Tran’s workshops were grounded in insights from his recent paper, Teacher’s Pet or Rebel? Practitioners' Perspectives on the Impact of ChatGPT on Course Design, accepted for publication in Higher Education.

The workshops received outstanding evaluations from both participants and hosts, highlighting their interactive format and Dr. Tran’s pedagogical skills. Joining him were Dr. Francisco José Castillo Hernández and Dr. Miquel Pérez Torres from FSE’s Centre for Learning and Teaching. Both Dr. Castillo Hernández and Dr. Pérez Torres are active members of the TAG Community of Practice on AI in Education.
