Academic Freedom
This community focuses on one of the pillars of a modern university: Academic Freedom. The concept of Academic Freedom, first established as a hallmark of the Humboldtian university tradition (Lehrfreiheit and Lernfreiheit), warrants reconsideration in light of significant changes in students, staff, education, and society. Today, lecturers encounter numerous challenges related to their roles in the classroom, their responsibilities as university employees, and their duties as citizens.
This community aims to critically explore the evolving concept of academic freedom and identify the knowledge and skills lecturers require to foster and sustain a safe, inclusive learning environment where all participants can freely pursue academic growth. The community will help to develop training materials for lecturers at our University. The initiative is led by Dr. Brenda Matthijsen, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Religion, Culture, and Society. Those interested in learning more or participating are encouraged to contact tag rug.nl.
