I do qualitative research on religion and secularism in the Netherlands, in recent years especially focusing on the themes of gender and sexuality. I am currently directing the project "Sexuality, Religion and Secularism" (funded by the Netherlands Foundation for Research, NWO). Previous research focused on Catholicism and spirituality in the Netherlands and on Nigerian Pentecostalism in Europe and the Netherlands. I have also published a series of theoretical and methodological reflections on the dilemma's of participant observation in studying religion.

For students: I only accept supervision of projects that employ qualitative research methods.
