My research explores the modern history of Jewish communities in the Islamic world, with particular attention to Jewish–Muslim relations, empire, and the transnational networks that connected these communities across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I examine how Jewish individuals, families, and institutions negotiated political change, social belonging, and religious and cultural identities, foregrounding the agency of non-European Jews. My Veni-funded project, Optimising Orientalism? Rethinking the Global Jewish Elite, 1860–1948, examines the relationships between transnational Jewish solidarity, elite networks, and imperial power, challenging established assumptions about centre and periphery. My broader research on Jewish business dynasties explores the intersections of wealth, philanthropy, gender, and authority. These interests come together in my forthcoming biography of Flora Sassoon, which investigates women’s participation in commercial, religious, and communal life across Baghdad, Bombay, and London. Alongside this work, I study Jewish cultural heritage and its preservation, interpretation, and public significance. Grounded in multilingual archival research and the historical press, my work connects individual lives and family histories to broader questions about mobility, inequality, solidarity, and belonging.
