Hessel Haagsma passed his defence

On September 3rd, 2020, Hessel Haagsma succesfully defended his PhD! His thesis titled A Bigger Fish to Fry: Scaling up the Automatic Understanding of Idiomatic Expressions was approved by the reading committee consisting of Petra Hendriks, Laura Kallmeyer and Caroline Sporleder. During the defense, with the spectators keeping their distance, he then also convinced the corona, consisting of Jan Odijk, Tommaso Caselli, Andreas van Cranenburgh, Gertjan van Noord, Jack Hoeksema, Petra Hendriks and Laura Kallmeyer.

Due to covid there could not be a large party afterwards, though rumor has it that the small gathering was enjoyable as well. What Dr. Haagsma will do next is still a mystery.
