When it comes to studying law, most students think of reading and highlighting legal texts, and then reading some more... as a primary source of doing legal reseach. This is true. However, with an ever growing number of podcasts surrounding legal themes, its also possible to listen to legal discussions of others to supplement considerations in perspectives of how legal situations and scenarios can be approached.

In recent years, both Faculty staff and students have disseminated their legal expertise and knowledge through podcasts, creating opportunities for themselves to gain further exposure in the legal sphere. Below is a list of their podcasts (in alphabetical order) which you may find interesting to add to your own playlists and when considering to study law with us here in Groningen:

Behind the Gavel - This podcast was created by the Groningen chapter of ELSA (European Law Student Association) and discusses a variety of topics including practical advice about being a (law) student in Groningen, as well as discussions of contemporary legal themes. You can access the podcast on Spotify here.

Borderline Jurisprudence - Borderline Jurisprudence is a "podcast on hardcore philosophy and juris prudence of international law". Thats the short, direct description given by creators Basak Etkin and Kostia Gorobets, that latter who is an Asst. Prof. in the Faculty of Law. You can access the podcast on Apple podcasts here.

Dura Lex, Sed Lex - A podcast focusing on International Relations as well as International and European Law. The podcast was created two International and European Law LLB students (now graduates), Anna-Lici Scherer and Alissa Poenaru. As a team, they explore various topics through solo episodes or interviews with different political science and law lecturers at the University of Groningen. The podcasts are published on various platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer. You can find this podcast here.

Our Rule of Law: The Podcast - This podcast discusses democracy and the rule of law, and was created by the Our Rule of Law Foundation. The hosts, Elene Amiranashvili, Zuzanna Uba and Anna Walczak, are all graduates of our International and European Law LLB programme and want to bring to light the most crucial challenges facing democratic institutions today. You can find their podcast on Spotify here.

Recht op Nieuws (Dutch language podcast) – Recht op Nieuws is a Faculty podcast (produced by Steven Kompier) that looks at legal perspectives on current affairs and how law plays an important role in society, as well as how to translate legal issues into current events. The host, Emeritus Professor of Law and Society Jan Brouwer, discusses with experts from the Faculty how legislation and case law influence our daily lives. You can find the podcast on Spotify here.

Terribly and Terrifyingly normal? - This podcast looks at, and discusses, the motivations and identities of the perpetrators of some of the most heinous acts of human cruelty in recent history - for example the rise of the Islamic State, and the genocides in Srebrenica, Rwanda, Cambodia and Nazi Germany. The podcast was created by Nicola Quaedvlieg and Alette Smeulers. Smeulers is a Prof. in International Crimes at the Faculty. You can find this podcast on Spotify here.

- Dr. Chris Brennan, Marketing Advisor, Faculty of Law
