Students in our Global Criminal Law LLM programme recently participated in an excursion to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC) in The Hague. The trip was undertaken as part of the programme course International Criminal Tribunals and Courts. The excursion was led by PhD Researcher and Lecturer Bereket Messele.

Students were able to visit the pre-trial and trial chambers (and other places) within the ICC, and provided with a lecture about its history, how it works, jurisdictional issues and challenges it is involved with, as well as current developments within the court. The KSC visit allowed students to learn more about the courts dealing with international crimes committed in Kosovo, between January 1st 1998 and December 31st 2000, by or against citizens of Kosovo or the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

As the International Criminal Tribunals and Courts course deals with both substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law, the ICC and KSC are excellent places to visit, as they deal with the prosecution and trial of persons charged with various international crimes.

In addition to the ICC and KSC, the course also provides students valuable knowledge and understanding of the law and practice of other international Criminal Tribunals and Courts, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). The course also adopts a critical approach to assess the role and effectiveness of these criminal law institutions in an international legal environment torn between globalization and fragmentation.
